Re: Petrol Tank Sender Units

Many thanks to all who posted replies. Nobody replied originally, so I just went ahead and removed the sender unit which tested OK. The arm, however was (I think) only about 8" long, so the tank was 1/3 full before the fuel even reached the float. By sticking a steel tape measure through the ho...

Petrol Tank Sender Units

My SC Jupiter was built in 1956 entirely from new parts purchased from Jowetts after the factory closed. If my new ignition coil (see other post) continues to start the car as well as it does at the moment, I really need a more accurate fuel gauge. Whether Mr Townend was unaware that the tank sender...

Re: Different "Engine won't start"

Hi Keith I started the car again yesterday and took it up onto the moors above my house (So I could coast home if the Jup died on me). It ran fine apart from a slight splutter on pick up which the car always had. (Standard 30VM Carbs) By the time I got home, the tickover had reached 1500 revs which ...

Different "Engine won't start"

When I first completed the restoration of my SC (National Rally was at Castle Howard), it always started reliably. After a number of years it would often refuse to start if left for any length of time. Initially I think the problem was degradation of the "petrol" as discussed in Mike Alfre...

Re: Engine would not run.

Sorry for the delay in replying, but it appears I am/was having Cookie problems on the new server! When I was trying, without success, to get the engine to start, I did check the new (Holden's) capacitor. I only have a low voltage multimeter, but the new capacitor seemed to have less "kick"...

Re: Engine would not run.

Hi Keith I have been down this route in the past. I am confident that the float chambers are not overflowing. The petrol was only seeping out when the engine was turning on the starter but not firing for a long time (30 secs?). If I left the ignition on but did not turn the engine - no seepage, and ...

Engine would not run.

Those of you who scan the Javelin forum pages may remember that I have, for the last couple of years, been unable to get my Jupiter to start.(I considered selling it at one point) Most of the replies pointed to flooding problems on the standard 30VM carbs. I removed both carbs and blew out all the j...

Carburetter? mixture problem.

I have an ongoing problem with my Jupiter which I have been unable to cure. I have posted a request on the Jupiter page in the past but many Jupiters seem to have been modified with Dellorto Carbs and external balance pipes etc so I thought I would try the Javelin page as my car has standard (Zenith...

Re: Unreliable cold starting

The carbs are 30VMs. They were professionally refurbished about 5 years ago. The electric fuel pump stops pumping when the float chambers are full.

Re: Unreliable cold starting

Thanks for the replies folks, but I think my problem may be too much rather than too little petrol (mind you, I'm pretty sure there are no accelerator pumps on my carbs) Things have moved on a bit though. I checked the plugs (almost new) and they were sooted up, so I cleaned them and the engine did ...

Unreliable cold starting

I have been attempting to wake my SC Jupiter (Zenith Carbs) from it's Winter hibernation. It started first press of the button but ran a bit 'lumpy.' Bearing in mind previous 'old petrol' problems, a couple of days later I drained the old fuel (though it works fine in my lawnmower) and put in new pe...

Old "new" petrol

On Friday, I attempted to wake the Jupiter from it's winter slumber, in order to attend the North East sections "drive it " day at Whitby today (Sunday 17th April). It eventually fired up and ran on tickover for about 5 minutes getting more uneven all the time until it stopped and would no...
