Re: Jupiter restorations.
Hi All, Absolutely all I would like to add to this debate concerning wheel cylinders is that I have experienced rear brake problems on full hydraulic systems that turned out to be completely unconnected with the wheel cylinders. After fitting all new parts to the rear brakes, we found it absolutely ...

Re: Hello...looking for info on buying a Javelin
Hi Nick, Your comments on Javelin's are very helpful and surely describes two of the major rust-prone areas. I would like to add a third, from bitter experience. Jowett's decided on a design that was between the later integral body designs, and those that relied on a full chassis. They decided to ha...

Workshop Practice
Hi All, Talking about days gone by reminds me of my college days on day release. Although I did an HNC course in Applied Physics, we had to have a basic knowledge of mechanical engineering. So, it was down to the basement of the college for the last period of the day, where the workshop was situated...

Nuts and Bolts
Hi All, I was working on my Jowett Searchlight generator the other day and was struck by the high quality of the nuts and bolts that were used by Jowetts at that time. Yes, they are BSF or BSW, but so sharp on the edges and accurately made, in comparison with the metric versions more usually in use ...

Hi David, I don't know if the double flares are unique to Girling? Yes, the tools are available, just have a look on eBay for a wide range. However, a word of caution. This is a situation where costs really do matter. I have a flare-making set, from SnapOn, and it wasn't cheap, But, to get repeatabe...

Re: Disaster - Fire in engine compartment
Hi Ant, Sorry to hear about the fire. Cannot help with the cause, but it sounds like it originated from a petrol leak and this possibly then being ignited by an electrical spark? The oil on top of the engine sounds unrelated to the fire, and may have come from at least three sources. The oil bypass ...

Re: Still looking for a Distributor cap and/or a full distributor for Short Two
Hi Keith, JCS is short for Jowett Car Spares, who are based in Keithley. Their stock is only available to members, but they stock a wide range of spares for almost all Jowett's models, with over 700 stock lines. If you order from them, they will get the part to you by post, asap. Paul Beaumont is th...

Re: Still looking for a Distributor cap and/or a full distributor for Short Two
Hi Cyclecars, If you are a member, have you tried JCS? They may well have just the spares you need. I think Diccon and Jan Pridie have a similar Short Two, so again, have a look in the membership List that has just been republished and give them a call? They may well have some spares, if JCS don't h...

Re: 1949 Javelin PA for sale
Hi WorcsWanderer, I completely understand your position, as it could easily have happened to me, if Dennis Sparrrow hadn't been able to rectify the stress cracks I had found. I do hope GUK will find a new home very soon, and escape the clutches of someone who just wants the registration and/or decid...

Re: Jowett's Drawing Office, divided into brilliant and not good?
Hi Nick, Thanks for your post, which adds good info. I think Jowett's did realise early on that the oil runs hot. I have suffered from burns to my finger from the dipstick! I know that the later oil filter housings have a provision for an oil cooler take off, but cannot remember if this was included...

Lacking in Pulling Power
Hi Alexander, I don't know why your original thread seems to have been taken over by Keith posting a new thread on Float Valves, but hopefully going back to your original thread on the lack of pulling power... I am glad you are getting some good diagnostics with the colour tune. Are all four cylinde...

Re: Did you know?
Hi Keith, You are probably right, but in this case, I suggest that the supplier is the best guide. A black one ( or even a red one! ) that comes from an unknown supplier is likely to be suspect. The cost differential is not much, and for the trouble a duff arm causes, I would always go for a reputab...

Essential checks on Nuts and Bolts
Hi All, It's spring and many of you will have ( or are about to? ) get under your dear Javelin, that has been resting in the garage, and get her ready for the 2024 season! Remember that 500 mile greasing interval? Whilst you are under her, can I recommend you check two things for tightness? One is f...

Re: Did you know?
Hi Keith,
Good point about seeing where the 'evidence' of spark erosion is on the rotor arm by visable inspection.
But having had bad experiences with black rotor arms, I would spend a bit more and fit a red one. Much less likely to be dodgy!
All the best,
David

Hi Bryan, Thanks for the photos. Yes, I agree that the standard of the welding is not the best, and unfortunately it looks like 'blob and tack' MIG. Not that I could do any better...I can do a good job with thick stuff with my stick welder, but you need diferent skills to weld thin plate with gas, T...
