JowettTalk and JowettGallery

Post by Forumadmin »

JowettTalk is a forum in public view and anybody with an interest in Jowetts can register and post onto it.

JowettGallery is a place to share personal experiences about Jowetts and any documents, pictures or other media including video. Only club members will have their registration accepted and most items there can only be seen by club members, although selected items can be made public. Items in the Gallery can be reorganized so any contributions can be put into an indexed library that can be searched hierarchically, in sections or you can use a search phrase. Comments about any item can be made to enhance the archive and add value.

You can cross reference each way between the two; but you should logon to the JowettGallery before using links on JowettTalk that go to the JowettGallery otherwise you may get '404' errors.

Currently you need to register, have your account activated and log on separately to JowettTalk and JowettGallery. Most browsers will remember your logon credentials so repeated logon should not be necessary. When registering please use your real name to make communication easier (this is mandatory on JowettGallery). Please choose a strong password. Remember to check you have entered your email address correctly otherwise your account will not be activated. Please use Jowett.org requests to confirm with the webmaster your membership of the club, if you are registering on JowettGallery. It also helps if you are not known to a the webmaster to tell him if registering on JowettTalk as well. This acts as a further check on your email address and eases the checking process as we want to prevent any undesirable postings!

Please can all of you check your email address in your profile. I sent a mass email out yesterday and received a lot of non delivery messages. I corrected some obvious spelling mistakes in some of them. If you do not do this you will not receive messages and eventually the account will be blocked.

Robin responded saying he had not received an email, which is a symptom of another problem I discovered. The jowett.net host IP address is blocked by some mail servers. I have asked the hosting company to fix that block see http://www.sorbs.net/lookup.shtml?69.175.15.178. It maybe I need to secure the mail system on the site as it is being accused of sending (or being able to send) spam.

Note this does mean that some of you may not have been receiving messages from others if sent via jowett.net.

Re: JowettTalk and JowettGallery down for a while

Post by Forumadmin »

From the hosting company. I think they listened to me! Not only are we getting a new server but they are telling us before the event.
We're pleased to inform you that we will begin upgrading your account,
and all associated subdomains, to a new hosting server within the next
48 hours.

This upgrade requires that we take your websites offline for a short
period of time to complete the transfer. Anticipated downtime is
between 1-2 hours; to help reduce the visibility of this outage
, your
account will be moved during the early morning hours (MST).
Additionally, we will be required to change your website's IP address;

I have seen in other forums where issue take place, similar to what happened here, basically inconsiderate and lazy hosting...lack maintance, excuses etc.....when brought out and disussed in the public arena...then new things start to happen.
Maybe a few ppl get a big rap over the knuckes when a spade is called a spade.

All now seems to be OK, I was trying to fix things whilst the move was taking place! This is the email sent yesterday lunchtime but as I was in the garage all day did not read till this morning. Please try to test out everything you can. As you are doing that please make notes of where you think the site can be improved. I am working on the on-line services discussed on JowettTalk and in the Jowetteer, the first being The Jowett Annual Weekend Booking Form' that will appear shortly.
Dear Keith,

The upgrade of your account, and all associated subdomains, to a new
server has completed successfully. Your website(s) are now hosted at
a new location, with the following IP address; please keep this for
your records.

173.254.28.149

If you are managing your own DNS entries for your domains, not common,
please update them now.

Like the previous email mentioned, your website is still available at
the old IP address, and will remain available for approximately one
week.

Now that your data has been moved to the new server, you may notice a
short amount of downtime as we finalize the migration. This downtime
will occur within the next few hours and usually lasts no more than 5
minutes, however it may be longer for accounts with a large volume
of files.

While no data loss was encountered during the upgrade, we suggest you
browse through all your hosted domain(s) to verify that they are
functioning properly. Additionally, note that this process required a
change in server timezones, from Central Daylight Time (GMT -5) to
Mountain Daylight Time (GMT -6). Any automated tasks you have may
require adjustment to trigger them at the desired intervals.

To optimize performance, the cPanel of your new server no longer has
Webalizer and Awstats enabled by default. If you wish to have Awstats
or Webalizer logging enabled you will need to turn this on manually.
Both are very easy to enable in the new server's cPanel under the Logs
category. Simply click the 'Choose Log Programs' icon, select the
features you wish and click 'Save Changes.'

Lastly, this upgrade included several software upgrades and changes.
The most noteworthy being a new Domain Manager, a new Billing
interface, and the more robust SimpleScripts, which replaces
Fantastico. You can directly import your Fantastico installed
software to SimpleScripts, which will manage the installations and
upgrades as Fantastico did.

If you have any questions about your account post-upgrade, or
experience any trouble at all, please do not hesitate to contact our
Support Department.

Hello Keith.

You said.
Let me know if you have any issues.
Maybe this procedure needs checking out after the shift . . .
I've just had 2 attempts at loading a .pdf file onto my "area". I made certain I took it slowly when doing the second attempt and noted what happened when I completed the "Add Items" form and pressed the final button. There was a flash of a narrow orange bar at the top of the next screen, then I was immediately presented with a further "Add Items" screen . . . .

If you go looking for it the file is named " Check out for ACR Alternator(a).pdf ".

I hope I haven't been doing something silly . . . again!

If it's eventually found would you please move it into the "Technical Library" ?

Regards.
Leo.

Seems that the new server issues are following me. Virgin server is down so no broadband or interactive TV services for 20 hrs! So this is being typed on my tablet and sent via mobile phone.

If Jowett.org and Jowett.net were on the home server they would not be available.

Time to change my broadband support? No, only second time this has happened in 20 years for so long with same supplier, just that now my back up is not another supplier but my mobile.

Engineer just left. Nothing to do with the server. Just an amplifier in the box in the road. Swapped in a minute.

Leo, You should get a confirmation screen below after the orange bar disappears and says 'Continue'.

Notice it lists, in this case, the two added files.
