'A Tour of the Jowett Works'

I've come across a piece of paper on which, sometime in the past, I've written:-

The Yorkshire Observer, Sat. 23 Feb. 1935. Modern methods of Car Manufacture - A Tour of the Jowett Works.

Can anyone remember why??

Hello Tony,

I don't know why you wrote that note to yourself, of course, but after a bit of a search for "what", the best I can do for you (us all?) is to refer to this document: http://www.bradford.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres ... on_No2.pdf where, if you look under "LOCAL STUDIES SOURCES" and then "LOCAL NEWSPAPERS" you'll see a reference to the Yorkshire Observer (from 1834-1956) most copies of which are available on Microfilm. Contact with them may result in that article (maybe) published on Saturday 23 February, 1935, being made available to you (i.e. Modern methods of Car Manufacture - A Tour of the Jowett Works).

It sounds like it would be mighty interesting article to read and certainly should be in the "Jowett Archives"! . . . . it not there already

P.S. I'm in contact with a lady at Bradford Library as from this morning (Mon 21 Nov.). She will attempt to access their archive and email a scan of the article to me should she be able to find it.

Well, Sarah from the Local Studies section of Bradford Library, has sent a couple of photocopies of this article to me, and I've emailed our thanks.

The Yorkshire Post of that era must have been a broadsheet as Sarah had to photocopy the top and the bottom half of the page and send me two A4s. She said:-

"I have found and made a copy of the Jowett article from the Yorkshire Observer, which is a full page feature, but the scanner can’t seem to cope with so much text! If you would like to e-mail your postal address, I can send the copies via snail mail instead (takes longer, but should be easier to read!)"

The photocopies are readable but not of top quality print, perhaps because they are a copy of the microfiche upon which the item is stored.

Nevertheless, I append a greatly reduced (in terms of Mbs) scan of both photocopies just to whet your appetite. I originally scanned them at 200 dpi,and the details shown in 'properties' were around 2200 x 1640....JPEG Image....2.21Mb, but I don't think Jowetttalk now accepts such large files.

Perhaps KC will let me know if there's a better way of storing the copies with a much better resolution. I'm not averse to posting the original copies received from Bradford, on loan, if someone can do this, as I don't know how.

I've uploaded the photocopies to my 'personal album' in the JowettGallery, in the hope that they have a better resolution, so that they can be read as easily as a scan of a photocopy of the original can be, when you're using a bog-standard HP printer/copier/scanner.

The article was sent to me as two A4 photocopies of the whole page, - a broadsheet in those days, but I think there's overlap so none of the text is missing.

If you view them 'full screen' and perhaps use 'control and +' the text will be legible. ('Control and -' will take you back to the original size).
