Possible Javelin Buyer

Post by jeff605 »

Hi, All. I'm after some advice, I've seen pictures of what looks like a very good Javelin, lots of money and time have been spent on the body and engine, there seems to be very little left to do. If memory serves me right ( these days increasingly it doesn't!! ) it's an 1948 car. The sort of questions I have are how much work is there in maintaining these cars, are they reliable, safe to use in modern traffic, what should I realistically expect to pay for a class 1 - 2 condition car, what's the spares situation ? If I go to view the car, anything in particular I should look for. I do know a little of Jowett history, and realise they are to a degree a " one off " make with many innovative for their day design features.
I am looking for a vehicle I can use, the Alpine which is still under a long term restoration belonged to my wife, who passed away fairly recently, and I no longer have enthusiasm to finish it or drive it. Any help or advice to help me come to a decision gratefully received. I live in Leicestershire. Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff,
I am sure others will pen many replies to you. But for know have a look through JowettTalk using the search facility. I think all your questions will be answered already.
My answer to you is positive on all counts. I have raced and rallied a Jowett in 22 countries. Have owned a Jowett since 1968. Am about to embark on 4000 mile journey to visit 10 capital cities in a Jowett. Take the car camping to Silverstone this weekend. All parts are available. Have many, many friends all over the world met through the Jowett Car Club. What more do you want?

I agree with the previous comments, but wish to add. Buy the best one you can afford. Do not let your heart rule your head.It is always a good idea to go to a club meeting and talk to owners and look at the cars. This aplies to any make but the Jowett Club is one of the best.

Better still if you can bribe a club member to go along with y0u and give a second opinion - a couple of pints should do the trick!

Jeff - Welcome to Jowett Talk - has George states probably the best thing to do is take a member of the club with you to veiw the car - they are refreshing to drive - always turn heads and are so much more than the box saloons that were being produced in the same era.

Let us know whereabouts in the country that you are and we shall point you in the direction of one our members who can advise / help further

From my own point of view -

A class / concours winning Javelin that wants for nothing should raise £7,000 - £8,000

A solid presentable car in good condition but could be improved slightly should make £5,000

A roadworthy car that requires panel repair / paint / retrimming normally change hands at around the £3,000 mark

Projects can be anything from £0 - £2,000 +

Regards

Chris
