There's an interesting article in this month's Tyres and Accessories (Trade publication-don't look in WH Smiths!) which gives a list of the most "disappeared" family cars-Austin Allegro coming out tops with only 291 remaining of the 640,000 units produced. There's also a list of the best surviving classics headed by The Lotus Elan where it is reckoned 38% are still in existence! (I'm pretty sure my 1967 Lotus Elan+2 is not included!)
Keen eyes are not required to spot that the Jupiter is NOT on the list-I trust our Press/Publicity folk will be demanding a Stewards Enquiry from Honest John!
The list, as you may have spotted, is only analysing 1980's cars, which was not a good decade for cars. IMHO 1970's cars would fare even worse, even though some might now be considered classics. Specialist cars such as the Elan and the Jupiter would have similar survival rates, although the Elan is erring into MX5 territory.
However, asking the DVLA for numbers of survived Jowetts might be something we could do. Anyone know how much it would cost?
One question such a survey might answer is 'how many surviving Jowetts are not known by our registrars?'
