As mentioned in the May issue of the Jowetteer by John Champion, I recently
collected some parts from a farm in Surrey. Amongst the many items, there were
thirteen water pumps. Now I have made up a tool which should push the pulley and
circlip; ninety percent of the time, this works very well. But in one case after breaking
the tool four times, I had in the end to 'butcher' the said casting away in order to preserve
the main body and the shaft. The downside to the pumps I collected, is that about half
of them are the earlier ones with the threaded fan blade. However, we now have some
spares which at some time can be rebuilt with new seals and a sealed front bearing. I am
thinking in the direction of modifying the bronze bush at the fan end with a sealed
ballrace or needle roller. Time will tell.
The Champions, myself, and Nigel Snelling-Colyer with his 'mucker' Richard
(the 'legover') Maylem set off for our Annual Rally on the 24th May in weather which,
until the last ten miles or so, was not too bad. It seemed to get worse the nearer we got
to Basingstoke. We only managed to make one small 'diversion' due to the 'Wise Man
of Robertsbridge' thinking he knew the way, but in so doing his confidence waned and
he decided to turn round. In fact, since looking at the ever faithful road atlas, he was
right, but didn't go quite far enough - not like him at all.
Now we were lucky with the weather over the Rally weekend; the Saturday was
sunny and dry overhead. The turn-out of cars at the Milestones Museum was better than
I expected, with a divers range of models. Michael Kavanagh braved the South with his
1913 tiller-steered car, which took centre stage on the field; the other cars were arranged
in a 'U' shape around it. It is always good to see Mike and his vehicles even if he is away
from 'God's Own Countery'! See you next year Mike, closer to home...
The Sunday was again blessed with sunshine for our scenic runs. A lot of us
rode the steam train on the 'Willow (Watercress? -Ed.) Line' to Alton and back, which
was relaxing at a slow pace. The usual 'Southern Sinners' set off then to find some solid
and liquid sustenance, guided by the ever sublime team from Hampshire. By the time
we'd pigged out, it was time for home - i.e. the hotel, in order to prepare for the evening's
jollies. Congratulations to all those who won trophies, and to the organising team for
their great efforts.
Referring back to the spares I collected in Surrey, there were two new late-type
front and rear bumpers. These I hope to get to Keith Winteringham sometime as he
unfortunately suffered a rear shunt - the Javelin, I mean!
Yesterday, Evan Olney John Champion, and Nigel Snelling-Colyer presented
themselves and two Javelins at home for various spares and to test carburettor suction
by means of a sonicmeter kindly lent by Evan to us. Both their cars were pretty evenly
balanced; when I had earlier tried mine, there was a quite a difference, so I disconnected
the throttle rod at one side and tweaked the stop screw until I got a balanced reading on
both carburettors. A useful tool. I believe the car is not only running better at lower
revs, but it also seems to be more economical. We'll see...
Having, for some unexplained reason, read page three of the Jowetteer, I now
realise that a certain ex-sheep farmer (or so he thinks) from 'The Only Way Is Essex', is
consistently baiting me with various remarks about my not only more wise and mature
years, but over time he has been quite spikey and this must have something to do with
where he lives. It's quite a thorny issue. -Ian Roxburgh.
