Anyone recognise the cars, the owners, and was anyone there that can put a story to these photos? Looks like a good event. At least three Javelins, and looks like two jupiters on the left (grey and green) with another one further back. Not sure what model EB952 is, anyone able to educate me on how to spot the difference or at least narrow it down?
Another one of my photos, Jack. SFC 99 is mine and the car behind is SX 6826 which belonged to the late Alan Perkins who is standing by the side of the track (in effect directly above my wife in the passenger seat of my car).
There are some good photos there - great to see a few photos from a few years ago, flicking through the album there are some good shots that are well worth showing off.
Was there racing at Brands Hatch, or something else going on at the event? It would be great to have a bit of info around the event, no doubt there will be people interested in the cars and history in years to come.
Nick, do you know any more about this car, and the sun visor above the windscreen? Looks like an interesting modification, never seen one of these before.
Jack , you may know that KBE155 is in the 2008 register , colour beige , owner not known . It is one of the 14000 series , E2PD 14190 D, registered by Lindsey , Lincs, CC in March 1953 or just after . These sun visors were made by an accessory firm and were quite popular in the 1950s when large windscreens were first introduced . They were made in three parts , the centre section being cut to size for the car concerned so could fit almost any model . I cant remember the supplier's name Bob
To deal with the Brands Hatch photo first. I really cannot remember what this was all about. Ironically, I used to keep a lot of old general car rally programmes until earlier this year when I discovered that where they had been stored in a shed had attracted mice which had left suspicious stains so I reluctantly binned them. I know it was not a race , or even practice day, but some kind of gathering that included a chance to drive (in rather sedate convoy) around the short circuit. I am pretty sure it was not just a Jowett thing because there are other marques visible but there seems to be a pretty heavy showing by the East Anglian section. However there are some Jupiters, which were a bit thin on the ground in EA section at this time so I suspect there must have been some representation from Southern.
The grey Javelin, just visible ahead of my SFC 99 was BDX 583 owned by Rex and Mary Emmerson. Way down the line you can just pick out a maroon Javelin which belonged to Harry Brierley. This was MDF 45, one of the "140 series" rebuilt cars - E2 PD 14015D. I remember having conversations about this car because it had a deluxe dashboard but standard bumpers. We tried to identify some of the other incongruities but I suspect as time has passed these have disappeared. I note that these days it goes by the registration RSJ 921 and has deluxe bumpers.
This leads me rather neatly to the picture of another "140 series" - KBE 155, standing in my drive just after unloading from a trailer. I bought this abandoned restoration in May and you'll find a bit more in the Javelin forum under "Another Javelin Changes Owner". I bought it in May 2013 from Tony Phillips, who lives near me. Although at one time a JCC member, he had let it lapse when restoration, which started in 1997, tailed off in about 2001. Although he had told me he had a Javelin, I did not fully appreciate which one until I came to view it. I thought the sun visor struck a chord and looking through my photos I see that it is just visible in the background of pictures I took at Nationals at Leeds Castle 1984 and Bradford, 1983. It appears that I did not think it merited a photo all of its own and I'll give you a clue. The sun visor is now off. I know someone must like it but perhaps they are better on the less svelte lines of a Mk 1 Ford Consul. You'll note that these have very similar (if not the same?) windscreens as Javelins and I suspect this period accessory was really intended for them. Certainly there are a few about. It is made of pressed steel by the way.
Interesting follow up re KBE. I have looked through a copy of Autocar for 8/7/1955 in my collection , it is a Golden Jubilee issue for Austin . Among the adverts is one by "Weathershields Ltd of Bishop Street , Birmingham" for their exterior Sun-Visor, of all steel construction, for protection from sun Glare , " an important accessory for safer motoring" ! It lists all the makes to which this can be fitted , Ford, Vauxhall, Morris , Austin etc and says it is available only through the Dealers. Being 1955 Jowett is not mentioned .
Weathershields made a large range of accessories, the most well known being their sliding roof, before these became a manufacturers item . Bob
