Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Interesting question, what is the most money ever paid for a Jupiter? An R4 has not changed hands for many years, the various special bodies though rare do not seem to command a price significantly above an SA or SC.
The SC seems to be at a very slight premium over the SA, perhaps due to rarity, perhaps due to practicality of the external boot and storage space behind the driver.
But this is an SA, albeit with an interesting former owner not mentioned in the advert: http://www.ivorbleaneyclassiccars.co.uk ... ission=any
Sold at Brooklands auction a few weeks ago, now being sold at a record price. Having seen the car I can't agree that it is "probably the finest example in existence" unfortunately as it is missing original hood and seats, even if the replacements are in good condition and do the job perfectly well.
Can anyone remember or advise on a car changing hands for anything over £30K? Is it time for Jupiter owners to consider their insured valuations? I'd love to see Jupiters sellling at more than £30K for all the owners who have invested thousands of hours in their maintenance and restoration over the years, and I think against the other cars in their class they are significantly undervalued, but is this a realistic price at £34.5K?

Wow! Is this the Jupiter which appeared at Basingstoke "For Sale"? There were two pale yellow Jupiters at the rally.
Incidentally I received my Road Tax reminder this week for the end of September for "The Yellow Peril". It also informed me that an MOT certificate was required! Fortunately she sailed through her MOT and had her annual professional full service at Daytona Autos in Congleton, Cheshire (I provide the other monthly/three/six monthly services as an enthusiastic amateur)
So with the MOT I shouldn't have a problem with renewing the road tax at our local Post Office, hopefully! Don't know how many "Nil" road tax discs they issue though!

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
It's overpriced and by far certainly not the best example ever sold - but nothing ever surprises me with dealers - said dealer paid £20,160 at auction - two weeks ago http://www.historics.co.uk/buying/aucti ... ke=&model= - he may have a few odds and little tidying to do on the car, a bit of advertising and he has a showroom to run etc so lets say it will stand the said dealer at £22,500 - but to then push for a £12k profit
!!
I would value a excellent Jupiter that wants for nothing and has a track record of few trophies in the £30k region - the car above I would value at no more than £23k - but then again anything is worth whatever the buyer is willing to pay for it !

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
So the question remains, what is the most expensive Jupiter that has actually sold? Might be a question for Ed, he tends to keep an eye on these things.
Of course anyone can advertise a car for any price, but it doesn't make it more likely to sell for that much! It might be interesting to see what the first Jupiter will be that breaks £30K, I am also keen to see the first Javelin that breaks £10K - we must be getting close to the very best cars out there getting close to these figures.

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Classic and vintage cars are getting widespread attention as attractive investments and prices are rising . Jowetts are no exception . If you believe in markets the price of such cars will continue to rise unless someone changes the rules . Meanwhile the advantages for JCC will be an increase in cars being restored and a rise in membership if we go out to attract them . Our members will be sitting in appreciating assets , rather rare these days ? One answer to the worry about the future of the JCC is to be involved with an appreciating asset , but we have to adapt .
The Jupiter KGA548 was registered in Glasgow in early /mid 1952 , it is not in the 2008 register but JOA may know the history . It will be interesting to find out what it sells for , why not send Oliver Bleaney an application form for the new member ! Bob

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Whilst it would be nice to think our cars would have a greater value, I personally would not push for higher prices as it will deter the younger people (who I seem to remember we are trying to encourage into the club) from even looking at Jowetts! I also think that if anyone wants to advertise a car at a price & manages to sell at that price, good luck to them. Each member has their own thoughts on the various cars that come up for sale & perhaps it should remain that way! My understanding is this : As a forum we are here to help ( as evidenced by all the topics covered) & discuss social events & promoting the marque, if any one cares to disagree please message me. Ivor Bleaney sold this bright yellow Jupiter with its roll cage and clip-on hood for about £23,000 to a German buyer who aparently intends to rally it. We'll see!

Was the buyer definitely German? We had a lengthy conversation with a Hungarian at Goodwood who seemed very interested in motorsport and was asking about the Jupiters we had with us. We told him about the car at Ivor Bleaney, so if it was him I want some commission!
At least a sensible price was paid, at £23K is sounds like a fair deal, but a long way from asking price - at least the car is going to get used instead of sitting on a forecourt waiting for a price that would probably take a few years to realise.

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
In terms of what you could buy for the same money the most expensive Jupiters may have been the brand new ones. What would be the price of a new one be today after inflation, cost of living index ? If it works out at say 40k then they are still bargains.
Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Interesting idea. Well the new Jupiter tested by The Motor was £1,086 in 1950.NigelMorley wrote:In terms of what you could buy for the same money the most expensive Jupiters may have been the brand new ones. What would be the price of a new one be today after inflation, cost of living index ? £1 in 1950 would be very approximately £23 today.
So a Jupiter, if they were still selling the exact same car for the same "value" would be £24,978. Fairly accurate tracking, considering the prices currently paid for a decent car at the moment.
If you could find one completely factory original and unused, I suspect it would be worth marginally more than that, but this is a novel way of looking at car values. Some of the owners of more expensive marques might get a bit nervous - an XK120 was £1,263 new, so £29,049 roughly. If you could find an XK120 in that condition I suspect you would be paying a whole lot more than £30K!!!

Re: Most Expensive Jupiter Ever Sold?
Marginally is not a word I would use - If you found a unused factory original car either unregistered / or registered with very low miles you would have to find somewhere in the £40k region in order to purchase it, excellent Jupiters are currently close to £30k - so a unused car is going to be quite unique - don't take my word for it look around the classic auction market - any classic with new / unused provenance always sells for well above any standard guide price - Has for a XK 120 with delivery miles you would be handing over in excess of £200k !!So a Jupiter, if they were still selling the exact same car for the same "value" would be £24,978. Fairly accurate tracking, considering the prices currently paid for a decent car at the moment.

Interesting recent photo, looks like the car has been resprayed at some point in the last few years.
This was apparently taken at Silverstone, I quite like the fairly subtle two-tone look of it:
