I read with interest Tony's article in the Feb Jowetteer which arrived this morning. I too have some of these letterheads somewhere from my time as editor and treasurer. It was me who proposed Roy as a vice-president of the club, I think it was at the 76 or 77 AGM at Grantham. I think Tim Brown was the seconder. The proposal was because of Roy and Jessie's long assossiation with the Jowett and their kindness and welcome to all members who came to their home, both at Top Lock and North Rode.
However, Roy built up a couple of heads for me and for some reason, probably shortage of parts, turned up some Triumph valves to fit. This caused me considerable trouble, although I never told Roy. A valve head came off at speed at the top of the M6 and went through the piston. I was on my way to Drummonds with my young son. Fortunately it was dark and I managed to smoke my way up the A7, buying oil on the way. We changed the piston and head in the morning and then went to Ingliston where there was a Jupiter racing...I think it was Pete Crosby, Drummond will remember.
The same thing happened to the other head coming back from a committee meeting at Harrogate. Pete Crosby very kindly put me up for the night and towed me home on a rope...about 70miles!...the following day. Wouldn't do that now...wouldn't be without that breakdown card !
Happy days !
Ted
