New Zealand Rally 2014

Post by Forumadmin »

2014 National Rally
CONTACT ALAN STANLEY jowett"at"xtra.co.nz for details. Some billeting is available.

Palmerston North

April 25, 26, 27

The National Rally next year is being held down the lower part of the North Island so as to make it central for as many members as possible and we hope this will be a good road trip for the Jaffas and be attractive to South Island members.

Planning is in the early stages but some key aspects have been finalised.

Accommodation has been penciled in and is very reasonably priced especially if you have a few people staying in the units. The motel has good facilities, good parking and is less than 2 km to the town square which is the hub of the city. The town square will be the venue for our concourse and showcase the cars in park like surroundings, with trees, fountain, etc but also the perimeter being the shopping precinct with plenty of browsing and cafes. We suggest you book your accommodation as soon as you are ready to secure the unit of your choice.

Before or after making the journey you may like to take a day or so in the region.

If coming from the South come up SH1 and perhaps return the eastern route south on SH2 or vice versa.

Nearby towns are Ashhurst, Fielding, Woodville, Foxton Attractions within an hour or so are
Owlcatraz (Shannon)

Manawatu gorge

International Police Museum (Dannevirke)

Air Force Museum (Bulls)

NZ Rugby Museum (Palmerston North)

Coachhousee Musem (Fielding)

Te Manawa Museum and exhibition centre (Palmerston North)

Te`Apiti Wind Farm

Tui Brewery

Tokomaru Steam Engine Museum

Galleries and gardens

Austin Mews Classic Car Collection

Colyton Clocks Collection

Thomsons Motor Cycle Museum

Palmerston North’s population is around 80,000 making it NZ’s 11th largest city and has the largest University in New Zealand as well as having military bases of Ohakea and Linton close by.

The largest windfarm in the southern hemisphere overlooks the city and nearby river flows east to west through the Manawatu gorge which is unusual.

Rally registration forms and further details will be available in next Flat Four. In the meantime enquiries to jowett@xtra.co.nz or phone 09 523 3798

A motel with a number of configurations and plenty of parking has been chosen. Econo Lodge The Villas have given us good pricing so we encourage you to book here and enjoy being in the rally atmosphere over the full weekend.

Well I have booked my room at the Econ Lodge for the 3 days so all I have to do now is figure out how to get there! I had to specify an arrival time so I said that "was in the lap of the gods"

Idlewood

Post by Forumadmin »

Landed after midnight and stopped at a good hotel close to airport. I was collected by David Homersham in his Javelin and arrived in Royal style with the English flag flying as we entered Idle wood. I was greeted by the bi-weekly group of a dozen members and shown around the stores and workshops.

Route here 12.7km.

Lots of Bradford cranks still to be sorted. The ones with blue passed the ringing test the other 90 went for scrap.
Image
Image
Now at Vic Morrison's house having driven his Javelin back. Route here 58.5km. It has floor gear change and a few other mods. Fluids were checked, toolkit supplemented and some spares loaded.
Then a look at the 4 decades of cars in the garage. I enjoyed my spirited drive of the CD when I commented on the strong centering on the steering when cornering hard.

Diverted on a scenic route to see above view of bay.

This is the Javelin against the southwestern Pacific ocean, only six months since I was pictured with a Javelin on the north eastern Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico and a week with a Javelin on the Bass Straight and Tasman Sea.
Now in Dunedin after a steep climb and descent through low cloud. Found the only bit of night life on South Island!

Here is today's route. 344km

Highlanders, Taieri Gorge, Catlins

Post by Forumadmin »

Weather was great so walked through the fantastic Botanical Gardens to get my rugby ticket.
Highlanders won and I was invited back to the Otaga rugby club for post match drinks.
Image

Up early to catch the train up the Taieri gorge. A bit wet but some impressive scenery.

On my way south now on the Southern Scenic Route to Invercargill . Some lovely windswept beaches and a couple of steep hills so far.
Ended up in Owaka where they seem to have a tea fettish.

Settled down in Owaka and tucked into a big steak that was last seen climbing the Catlins.
Took a few walks through ancient forest and along an old coach path to a great beach.

Made it to Slope point the southernmost road a car can travel on.

Route for last two days 277km.

Burt Munro and Bluff

Post by Forumadmin »

Image
Stayed with Colin and Aylis MCDONALD in Invercargill.
We went to Bluff to have some oysters (the best in the world). Then climbed the hill to see around and where the first settlers arrived.
Image
Colin knew Burt Munro of fastest Indian fame so spent some hours looking at all the parts sacrificed to the god of speed and the record breaking bike.
The car used in the film

These are the sands that Burt and Colin did speed trials on.

Te Anau and Milford Sound

Post by Forumadmin »

I left Invercargill visiting a few beaches and over many hills on the way to Te Anau.

Route today 187 km

A small property for rent!
This is a suspension bridge called Clifden.
Image
I went for a walk through the Rakatu wetlands, enjoying the many birds and flocks of geese.
Image

After a great meal at the Redcliff cafe and a good sleep, I kitted out for hiking and sailing.
It was a day of rest for the Jav but not for the driver. I was up early for a trip with 10 others to Milford Sound. Fantastic 120k drive then a sail into the Tasman Sea in the sunshine (the only part of N Z without rain). Unforgettable!
Then a 2 and a half hour treck up a mountain into the clouds with 3 others half my age. Another great meal at Redcliff and a pint with the locals.

Queenstown.

After a walk along the Te Anau lake to the wild life sanctuary, I filled Wally up with petrol and left for Queenstown.
Route today. 171 km

I stumbled across a disused steam railway.
Image
Picked up a couple of girl hitch hikers on the way as I guessed where they were going.
Queenstown throbs with adrenaline . Bars are lively with a dozen draft beers at $10 to sample and live music to entertain the ears. Food is good value at $20 for a ribeye steak. Settling in to a few pints until the bar closes at midnight for Good Friday. Last week the royals and the Bulls came to Queenstown, but pretty sure they did not frequent the bar I am in now.

Jet boat and Wanaka

Post by Forumadmin »

Started off this morning with what was billed as the world's most exiting jet boat ride. I am the only guy stupid enough to let go and wave to the camera.
Image
Then up to a gold mine village of Arrowtown. Route today 181 km
I have just looked at the map and found out I went over a pass prohibited to rental cars.
Image
Never mind, the Jav and I enjoyed the many hairpins and steep climb of the Crown Range on the way to Wanaka. Here I had a stop at the lakeside before going to see the Warbird display of aircraft.

Mount Cook and Tasman Glacier

Post by Forumadmin »

Leaving Wanaka it started to rain and there was a bad accident on the Lindis Pass before my overnight in Omarama. It must have take the emergency services an hour an a half to get to the scene as I saw them leaving when I arrived in the town.
Image
Next day was initially good at 6 a.m , then the mist came down at 8, cleared again by the time I reached Mount Cook at 9:30. But then the rain came so I cut my losses and went to the Tazman Glacier.Route today 411 km.
Image

Just to let you know the Jav has been returned to Vic in Whitecliffs having not used any oil the whole journey (over 1471km). This appears to be down to windscreen sealant as a gasket cement and Masda pistons, although the ones in Vic's CD burn oil. So it must be just luck!

Only issue was an exhaust bolt dropped out and caused the exhaust flange gasket to blow.
Now with David, Judith and Edward Homesham having had a tour of Christchurch.

Two Jowetts meet by accident in Christchurch.

No they are both real.

This is the power steering mod done by John Moody on his Jav.
