Advent Calendar.

Post by Keith Clements »

I apologise for posting this non Jowett related topic (unless you consider the tenuous link that Jowetts are made from matter created in the subjects of this calendar)

You will be astounded by the pictures and even more astounded by the narrative of each of these pictures. 13 of the 25 have been posted so far so I will be following the additions every day.

I have also watched on i-player the first in the series which stretches the mind to even greater incredulity. Only a few days left to view last week's episode. The next in series is on Tuesday evening.

Keith - No apology required - whilst the forum undertakes the principal motive of connecting, assisting & informing the Jowett community it would be a sad world if nothing other than Jowett topic was posted - being a member of several forums that use classic/ vintage cars / vehicles has the founding / base platform I can assure you that all of the forums have a 'Off Topic Section' - it often reveals many hidden talents of the forum members and is a great basis of sounding just about anything that you are unsure about - many forum members form strong friendships with like minded members just through these sections alone - I appreciate that we are not exactly 'men (or ladies) in sheds' but it would be wrong to assume that our forum religion is nothing but Jowett :D If you are still questioning the principal of non Jowett subject matter within the the forum could I ask that you have a browse around other like minded forums in order to broaden the spectrum - off topic items maintain communication & interest between members and providing that the main subject matter of the forum remains Jowett then I personally see little harm - ok I will now crawl back under the floorboards at home and continue to pull the central heating apart. :(

Chris, I agree will all that you said but maintaining a balance is very difficult such that as a moderator the general rule has been that subject matter should be Jowett or club related. Some people have already critisced some of the 'banter' that has happened on this forum and I can see their point as it does detract from what they want to read. I feel the same many times when I want people to get to the point! :(

I have been thinking about how we trim and prune the forum, particularly how we pull out all the good technical stuff into some sort of compendium, similar to how Mike Allfrey compiled the technical notes. ANY IDEAS?

We already have an archive section in JowettTalk which has some archivists already 'appointed'. Nominations are invited! These archivists have the ability to copy and edit posts from anybody so would have the tools to perform the compilation. The attachments too could be fed into the Gallery for easier referencing where the Legacy project already has 'Curators' appointed.

I do not know when we will reach a tipping point and we HAVE to prune the forum as its MEGABYTES overload the system. The real problem comes if there is a system failure and the system has to be rebuilt. With so much data the recovery time could be days if it had to be done remotely from my home system. Currently the system is backed up across the Atlantic and hopefully would only take a few hours to get up and working.

This is sort of on topic as a meteorite could hit anywhere at anytime. The previous JowettTalk was hit by the Buncefield refinery explosion and was out for a week.

Hmm, controversial but none the less - Does the same point apply to other forms of media within the club ? - I think not !
