Does anybody know if a 6 volt wiper motor can be safely run on a 12 volt system?

It may work but will run the wiper motor too fast and probably overheat the motor. (6 volt starter motors are ok on 12 volt but they are much heftier)

Simplest way would be to try to obtain a 12 v motor from a CC Bradford ( beware early CC's were 6 volt) Its a standard lucas motor common to other vehicles. Otherwise you could try putting some sort of resistor in the circuit ? somebody on here may know what anad how!

Motors are inductive so a resistor may not be the answer as there would be a high current until the back emf kicked in. However, a resistor would be better than nothing, one used for the ignition coil might be a good start, but a variable one would be better and a thyristor circuit as used on variable speed motors would be better (not sure if they could be made to work on the DC wiper motor though) See Wikipedia

or a convertor like this or this lucas
