Pre-War pick up on ebay

I have seen this truck some years ago and my father and I struggled to work out its provenance then. Current owner seems reluctant to reveal its chassis number. I can't remember our conclusions from so many years past but it looks to be a combination of possibly pre-war 8hp van, pre-war seven van doors on a CA chassis. ANy other ideas?

Link listed below but has than hour to run - it's with a dealer and it looks like he is holding out for top money - the cab looks very odd the roof line is out of proportion with the doors and Richard may well be right in the fact that it is a bitza

There is something very wrong with the bulkhead - it appears to be at least 9" too short.
The rear of the cab roof is also incorrect as are the front wings.
The chassis number is meaningless as they had no chassis number - just the engine number. The chassis / engine number in the log book shown indicates that it was aregistered in June 1937 - if that log book has any connection with this vehicle
The 1938 / 9 commercials had the same chassis as the CA Bradford (IIRC)
Ian Aitken Kemp should know as he is in one of the photos!!!

Yes Andy, I know all about it. It is a collection of various bits which I bought from Tony Fearn way back in the 1980's in my early days in the Club. The picture in the ebay photo-montage with me and my late son on it shows what I originally got from up North (I was then in Somerset). Chassis, wheels and some other bits. The bulkhead was from a Bradford, CC I think. New woodwork was from Dick Spurden. the whole thing was a bit of an abomination. Gave it to my son to play with and he garaged it at a friend's fathers works. A couple of year's later we found out that the firm had gone under and the van had disappeared. Ended up with the late David Thom who eventually sold it to someone near the south coast I think. I contacted this owner who had changed the reg. no. and said he was 'running it around his estate'
I still have the logbook that came with the chassis. Hope new buyer, if there is one, gets to know what it really is before buying !. Ian

My wife Hilary remembers this well as she received it as a 'birthday present' after Roy Braddock (a consummate salesman, and lovely chap) had sold it to me in the late 70s on one of my frequent visits to 'Ingle Nook' in North Rode. I think I picked it up somewhere near Poynton.
It might just have been a 32nd birthday treat for her, although I can't remember the exact date it left Clayton le Moors.
She'd never had a flat-pack Jowett lorry for her birthday ever before (or since!!).
I hadn't a clue what I'd bought, but now it's all coming out.
The black and white photo of the bits on Ian's trailer was taken outside my front door.

Possibly CA engine. Could be Bendix Cowdray brakes? Pre-war doors? Fascinating history unfolding. I'm sure it would generate huge interest at whatever show it attended. I hope it finds an enthusiastic owner.

Abomination it may be, but it is at least all JOWETT and Ian appears to have made a very thorough job of stitching all those disparate bits together!

It remains a roadworthy example of what can be done if you really want to.

Well done to all those that contributed to its history.

the chassis and engine look to me to be 138/9 van rather than Bradford. The engine has the late type ( fat) hydraulic mountings and no flanges for the Bradford rubber mountings. The chassis does look to have the correct mounting holes for the hydraulic mountings. It should also haave Bendix brakes although a small number of 1946 Bradfords also haad them.

''the grille is defiiantely '38 van as is the bonnet, the cab doors could well be 1938 van as well. the cab looks to be mounted 9" or so forward meeting the bonnet without the scuttle???

As a non-Jowett owner, but someone who likes small old commercials and isn't too concerned about originality, I have to admit I rather like it. What would be a sensible price for it?

Sense does not govern an auction price, just the heart or, perhaps with more experienced buyers , the gut.

Given that any commercial pick up of this era in running condition is priced in the £6k - £10k + region and that a original Jowett Bradford pick up would also be the same price bracket,
(A earlier Jowett pick up that is pre war would be well in excess of this) - scale this back to take into account that the vehicle is a bitza and I would guide the price at £4,500 - £5,500

I don't think that the said vehicle did actually sell on e bay which is why it is being offered for sale at auction

Many thanks for the replies to my question, I decided not to bid on the pickup in the end but have just checked the auction site and it sold for £4,000, so once you add the fees etc your estimate was spot on!

Do we know who bought it? I do hope it has gone to a JCC member, as I rather liked it!
