Jupiter tyres

Post by 114 »

I'd be very glad of recommendations for Jupiter tyres. Wear rate is not a great consideration but potential ageing is.
Current tyres are 550x16 Avon Tourists
Many thanks.

That's not that you get a discount by calling Longstone Tyres and stating that you are a JCC member - your order needs to be placed through Jowett Car Spares for you to qualify for the discount - the tyres will be then delivered direct to you the following day

Chris, thank you for the clarification. Off hand do you know what the discount is?
I was considering the TT or Wayfarer tyres as they would look 'correct' I think, are lighter & have a better speed rating then the Avon Tourists, which don't semi to have lasted very well. Any thoughts?
I see you have a P6 V8 as 'the other' car.. very good choice, we've gone for a P3 75 & P4 110!

Roger - Unsure on the discount but you will get them cheaper than what Longstone offer on their website - Paul Beaumont has full details - avoid 'Waymaster Premiums' at all costs - I put them on the Javelin and they lasted 4 years but only covered 4,000 miles - still loads of tread remaining on them but all the side wall cracked open - see pic - I have put Avon Tourists on the car since and it handles very, very well - Yes I have a nice P6 V8 Auto, but also have a P38 V8 Range Rover for my tow car along with a handful of Jowetts - I have even have a very low mileage Maestro somewhere!

Thanks Chris, I'll contact Paul.
Quite a collection!
I will avoid the Wayfarers. In fact I notice Longstone don't offer them, only the TT Classic in that price range.
114 was in hiding in the US for some 60 years so has only covered 8500 from new. This makes the cracking of the Avons all the more galling as they are only 10 years old and covered under 1000 miles

Chris, just rechecked Longstones site. It appears they do in fact offer the Waymasters

The tire industry would advise us that any tire has a maximum life span of 6-7 years, regardless of usage. Rubber compounds degrade with time and heat cycles assist in the process by driving off the chemicals that make the tire "supple", hence the dry cracks in the sidewall. As Jowett run mostly tube-type tires, it is your inner tube that starts to act as structure rather than as a vessel holding air.

My advice is to buy a set of radials. Switching to Michelin radials on my Javelin transformed the ride quality of the car. Some years back I switched the racer to Avon Turbosteel and was stunned by the improvement. I beat of a couple of drivers that had always finished ahead of me and was accused of having modified the motor AND taken driving lessons!

Scott, thanks very much for the input. The Turbosteels sound most impressive!
