Jowettalk features

Post by Nick Webster »

For the first time ever, I plucked up courage to fill in the online session registration and set off in search of the rally videos.
I regret that despite my fast fibre connection, the loading tumbler just kept going round and despite trying a couple of films, I never actually got to see any. Thoughts?

While I was registered I also had a look at the car database. Despite various cars of mine appearing on the hard copy list once made available via the club, they do not appear on the database. Does this mean that it is down to the car owners to fill this in?

Nick,
I am not stalking you, honest.

It took my fast (though not fibre broadband) about 30 minutes to download a rally video which was about 30 minutes long. It just went round and round for me too.

I shall look into the car database now you have mentioned it.
Compliments of the Season,

Which video was it?
It does depend if others are downloading at the same time but I can check.

You can add the cars that are missing using Member Services. If you did not complete a vehicle description form or do it on line then they may not be there.

I tried two videos, the 1966 onwards compilation and the 1989 rally. I noted the instructions that stated they would start after a few minutes and the rest of the movie would down load while I was watching, but this seems to not be the case.

I will check but they did start to play after the initial buffer loading. Perhaps it is browser or OS dependent

I just tried with FireFox on Windows 10 and Video ID number 1 started to play after 30 secs.
Then on Chrome it started to play after 3 secs., probably because the chunks were already in the network buffers.

Then tried on Android and Firefox started after 10 sec.

Same when I tried Video ID 16

Please try the same video then others and let me know which OS and Browsers you are using.

Today I successfully watched videos 1 and 134. Each of them took approx 3 minutes to buffer before starting, but at least this time they did start. I think the page layout is rather confusing and after I had found the video I hunted about trying to to find how to get it to play. A nice button marked "Play" would be good.

It is a bit annoying to find that while watching one video the session has timed out and one has to go through the log in proceedure again.

Any ideas why your browser did not start to play the video earlier before?

Yes I guess a big button saying PLAY is easier than reading 'please click this link to play'..but my reasoning was that it acts as a confirmation you have selected the video you wanted. Also reading what is on the page is important, it might help you understand what to do. In this case I would like people to make notes and contribute to our history.

The timeout is there for security as we do not want a session left open after the user has gone to sleep watching the video.

Put an ICON or ALIAS on your desktop or Favourite in your browser and then you just have to click and enter your password to restart session.
Change made to webpage.
