Camshaft stud missing

Why not tell us about your car (start with a picture) and say what you have done with it; either restoring or using it over the years. Restoration of particular parts is of special interest. Club members can have their space on in their Personal Album to do this.

Camshaft stud missing

Post by Bev »

Firstly, I have to say I have my limits as a home mechanic but I think this camshaft issue found by my local Veteran/Vintage engineer may be of interest to members. I spent over two years, unsuccessfully trying to get my Jupiter 1a running properly so I could get in it, start it, and go for a run in sunny West Wales. No Way. By chance I found Walter a local engineer who was in his late eighties and happy to have a look for me. I limped over to his place and within a day he had it sorted and at long last ticking over properly. The problem turned out to be the wrong profile air screws. To try and set the carbs up, I was working from the recommended two turns out as a starting point but in actual fact they ended up being set at only half a turn out. Needless to say for two years plus I was trying to get the engine to run on far to lean a mixture. I told you I had my limits. However after this he wasn't very happy with the noise coming from behind the camshaft cover. when I gave him the go ahead to investigate, this is where it got interesting. The cover had the usual end float adjuster fitted but there was no hardened plug in the end of the camshaft so over the years the end float adjustment had been running dry against the shaft itself causing some very bad wear. Luckily this turned out to be just about repairable. On closer examination it turns out the shaft had had the early sprung self adjusting plug fitted which had long gone missing, probably lying in the bottom of the sump somewhere. This is where Walter really earned his money. He took the camshaft out, cleaned up the end and drilled/reamed out the end to the correct diameter so he could press home the later hardened plug which was supplied by JCS. On top of this a new oil way was drilled through the end of the shaft with another drilled from the side to pick up an oil feed for the stud and adjuster faces. I have to say, that none of this work could of been carried out without the support and the spares backup from JCS, Many thanks to Paul Beaumont and the team. The car is starting and running well now except for what I think could be a very loud induction noise on acceleration. I am currently asking for help/advice in the Jupiter forum.

Damage caused by end float adjuster because hardened stud was missing from the end of camshaft

End of camshaft cleaned up and reamed out ready to have the harddend stud pressed home. All this, obviously, carried out with the camshaft removed
