Re: STEERING LINK
H Moises,
I have asked some colleagues to send measurements of their cylinder block gaps from the top of the chassis member under the block on each side, so you can compare these measurements with your car.
I have had a reply from Chris Spencer as follows :-
Measurements on my Javelin are as follows:
Top of chassis leg to underside of crankcase (measurement taken at the front end of the crankcase more or less in line with the front bumper frame bolt) = 40mm
Bottom of chassis leg to underside of crankcase (measurement taken at the front end of the crankcase more or less in line with the front bumper frame bolt) = 90mm
Top of crankcase web joint to rear / backmost underside web of drag / steering link = 35mm
Top of crankcase web joint to topside / frontmost web of drag / steering link = 50mm
Measurements are approximate but accurate within + / - 2mm
Can I also suggest that before getting any further Moises checks the security of the steering box – I have previously come across weak / failed upper mountings on the inner wing & chassis leg on several Javelins over the years – if the steering box is rotating even slightly it will cause the drag / steering link to lower / contact the crankcase – same thing applies for the steering idler but it’s more likely to be the steering box.
Chris also sent the following photos :
Do hope this helps?
All the best,
David

Re: STEERING LINK
Many thanks to all David, Chris and Keith for your help. I have compared the measurements provided by Chris with those of my Javelin and they are very similar with differences of +- 2 mm. Keith, I have checked the centering of the steering and it is correct, both steering rods are the same length. The rubbing only occurs in the extreme positions of the steering, so I think that the problem is in the height of the front mounts. It also seems that the engine is slightly advanced

Re: STEERING LINK
Hi Moises,
Many thanks for your reply. Unfortunately, I don't have any front engine mounts to compare with yours. However, hopefully someone else can measure theirs and see if your measurement of 42.96mm looks about right?
I agree that it looks as if the engine mounts, either front or rear, are causing you the problem. By the way, your engine looks nice and clean!
All the best,
David

Re: STEERING LINK
Yes your engine mounts are too thick. I have measured three and all between 32 and 34 mm. They should be three metal plates with rubber as the sandwich filling. Modern solid rubber ones may work. I would hope JCS ones are correct but worth them checking their stock before shipping to you.

Re: STEERING LINK
The engine mounts look too thick to me. They are not JCS parts. I am aware of a spurious mounting (possibly part number 2243 - application unknown) that fits the Javelin/Jupiter mountings but is too thick. JCS has a significant quantity of "correct" ones, and has sold lots of them without complaint.

Re: STEERING LINK
Note that Moises measurements include the thickness of the mounting brackets and not just the engine mount itself - measured like for like on 2 Javelins that I currently have with me I have a measurement average of 38mm - So we are only at a 5mm difference - but that's probably all that it needs for the link to clear the crankcase - So a new pair of mountings and see where it gets you - Good luck
