Thanks Nick,

The break in the shim was at one of the 'wave' dimples as shown in the photo below. I put the cause to metal fatigue. The master cylinder had several seal kits over the years and the shim was never bent. However, just before COVID I did apply the brakes really hard, so, I am wondering if a shock load was the final straw.

Maybe the current shims have a better life span, due to the dimples not spanning the ring section? Although close to seventy years is rather good!

None of the kits I installed in the Jupiter contained a new shim. They were probably Australian Repco PBR kits.

An MC rebuilt by PAST PARTS for JCS in exchange for one that I provided JCS amongst many other despicable faults contained a flat washer in place of the shim. Luckily I did check before installing and promptly returned!

Hey Keith!

Such is what we are up against in these modern times.

Had a chat with a Jaguar XJ-6 Series III recently. He was what we call 'kind of tense' - to explain, the rear brakes had been attended to by a brake specialist. The repairer had cut holes in the boot and back seat area to gain access. The car was a real concours contender, much nicer than the one I had a number of years ago.

The really sad aspect is that Girling went to the trouble of making that shim the way it is, so, what would be the reasoning be to fit a flat washer?
