Javelin Engine Numbers

Post by David Morris »

Hi All,

Does anyone know how many Javelin/Jupiter crankcases actually got made up into engines and were then stamped with engine numbers?

We know that 23,307 Javelins were made but my Javelin has an engine serial number of E3PE32071. I have heard that there was a high 'scrappage' rate at the factory, but this seems excessive? Were nearly 9000 scrapped on final test?

Also, does anyone know at what engine number were the 'O' ring liners introduced?

Many thanks,

David

Hi David
I thought my car being registered in August 1953 would have a late number but just had a look and it’s a factory recondition with number R6539 so sorry can not help

David,

I would think that an engine number in the 30 thousands is unlikely and probably just transposed numbers in error.

I am not sure if the engine number is the right place to be looking. Many engines have been re numbered, perhaps to match the original. For example, I have a PE stamped Series 3 block with a D9 PA engine number on it. Probably the block numbers are a better guide, but again very difficult to interpret. It is disappointing to reflect (given our celebrations about the age of the club) that we do not have much of an archive by way of official manufacturing data to refer to. I suspect that some of the block numbers would mean more to the factory than a simple number sequence. Likewise, I understand that the rubber seal engine numbers were mingled a bit with standard engines so it might be difficult to pin down a true starting number. The fact that the factory got in a muddle with even the actual car numbers is testament to the difficulty Jowetts had with record keeping.

The block numbers, engine plinth number and engine plate numbers could be collected by request to all members. I have about 30 blocks so could make a start. JCS probably have a similar number.
This might give us some information of correlation between block and plinth numbers and also percentage of reconditioned engines . Careful inspection of plinth number such as height of plinth and quality of numbers might show blocks that do not have original numbers.

Hi Strenner,

Thanks for the info about Bulletin 149. This lists engines that do have the 'O' ring liners and the highest number given is 26573. Do you mean that any number higher than this is automatically assumed to have the 'O' ring modification? This doesn't seem to be mentioned in Bulletin 149?

Many thanks,

David
