JowettTalk upgrade

I am attempting to find some time to move the JowettTalk database as suggested by the hosting company. I will attempt to minimize disruption during this time.

I may also take the opportunity to update the PHPBB to version 3 which may have some features you would like.

The last time I did this it took many hours copying all the necessary modifications needed to prevent spammers and provide you with upload pictures. The new version should have these built in.

Anyway early days and I have to find time and motivation. If the new water pump fixes the overheating problem then I may have the time; so then all I need is the motivation.

What mods....do we realy need them as against want...or use
I would sugest "new post since last visit" appear on all logged in pages.

The new version has a draft folder...this is a pain in the butt, not needed

Im still using 2.0.7 added what mods and made mod those the members would need and use, and havnt needed to upgrade or anything since 2003.

The other advantage of note upgrading over yrs is security...the script kiddies are using scripts for later releases...

Regarding mods. I need them so as to make my life a bit easier from all the hackers.

Interesting take on security. Most software becomes more secure as supplier improves it. Old software has lots of vulnerabilities. Ok very new software may have teething problems.

Block all http= requests
I block countries like china, brazil, turky a few other asian, afican and mid east conutrys, a couple french and german isps and a few others with CIDR
along with individual ips from countries like GB Sweden, USA Aussie
These tend to be from computers that have been hyjacked by remote bots because they have not had OS security updates.
Incidence has dropped from 100s per day to nil to 3 per day.
I have accidently bloked 1 member in Bulgria and another in Romaina over the last 18 months

If they get a 40x error they cant get any futher

Note this takes out 99% of spam attempts also.
What is left is from USA GB etc but unlike the attempts from China Brazil Turkey etc they have 4 to hits and dont return...the chinese etc often repeat for 20 or several 100 hits...occassionally over a 1000 now get a 40x error and give up after 1 hit without getting to the website.

With the state of my eyes at present, I find reading JowettTalk very difficult due to faintness.

There is a very good forum site for the MG ZT and Rover 75, Very clear and easy to read, but full of utterly childish rubbish!

Not sure about the spaces, but that is how it looks on my screen.

We had 30 mm of rain yesterday, and more in the night - the garden is loving it! Hope some of it fell on fires still burning.

There has been much discussion about readability. Generally black text on clean white background has been found to be best. Although some complain the white is harsh and tiring. Hence the use of a light blue or grey background.

The site you point to is essentially opposite with white on dark blue background.

The use of colour is extremely difficult to justify with so many with some form of colour blindness.

I simply used the default theme since I assumed this was likely to be considered the best for most purposes. The theme colours also fit well with the Jowett badge by coincidence.

The web page text does not resize with the IE text size choice. However, change the properties of your desktop through right clicking on desktop and choose Display settings then move slider to say 800x640 will make the text larger. Of course purchasing a larger screen would also help.

However, that ignores your point that the other web page for you was easier to read. We could do a trial with inverse settings. What does everybody think?

My eyes are not amazing these days either, but I have no trouble with the current format, indeed I think it is very good with the alternating blue/grey.

All the rest of the technical stuff goes over my head, but I don't think the black on light grey/blue should be changed.

Keith u can mess around all you like, but as that web site describes you are already at the best ...or a pale blue same shade as present ..a flip of a coin... maybe increasing the lighter grey a smidgen??
I spent hrs finding what was best for our sites and ended up back to default.

R clk desktop/properties/settingsadvance3d/general/ dpi setting
choose 120 or even 150 may help

And also in start/programs/accessories/accessibilty/magnifier

PS the site seems to be running far crisper at the moment

Just a thought. You may like to check your screen. If it is a Cathode Ray Tube then they do deteriorate after a few years or it may just have lost focus.

Liquid crystal displays also suffer from deterioration after an even shorter time. The backlight looses its brightness. Old displays will not have such good resolution as a new one.

There are also some solutions on the market for people with poor sight. My company does a whole package of Assistive Technology.

You can try a contrast and gamma check on your display just to see if blacks and whites are properly displayed and colours are correct.

we all have touble getting the contrast and brightness right
was told this yrs ago
set brightnes about 40%
turn the contrast right up 100%
Now turn the brightness down til ok
If still too bright,put brightness at 10% and turn contrast down to suit.

And site still crisp loading etc.

Ive had No problems with Jowett talk so im very happy
