Jowett CD On Pathe News

Post by isleofthanet »

Hi All,

Always looking for anything 'Jowett' on the internet I found several entries on the British Pathe News including coverage of CD2 HKW 272 in
Switzerland.
Just Google British Pathe News and type in Jowett and look for Jowett Car In Switzerland 1952. Pity it is a silent film as I am sure the sound would have been interesting!

Regards

CD2

Post by george garside »

Brilliant! - this was CD2 which presumably had the 2 cyl engine at that time . It lokks to have been climbing at a fair rate of knots as well as cornering on rails. Oh what a pity etc!

Splendid! And I was led to believe that the 2cyl engine was disappointing. Certainly doesn't look like that from this film!!
Thanks for finding this Alan.

That news footage is absolutley brilliant, however if that was the overhead inlet valve and side valve exhaust version of the reworked Bradford engine then Jowett would certainly have been on to a winner.
I would have thought that weight of the steel body and combination of the 2 cylinder engine would have limited the performance of the 2 cylinder CD.
Perhaps the improved gradability is attributable to the 4 speed gearbox.

the CD at , I think, 34 bhp gave same power per litre as the javelin. According to Horace Grimley it was 'tuned for torque' which was probably the reason for the ioe valve set up as it enabled a much larger inlet valve. Does anybody know what the torque was on the CD twin. As far as power output if (& I am guessing, the CD weighed around 17cwt it would have haad 2bhp per cwt , not far off the Javelins 2.3 bhp per cwt.

The desire for high low speed torque was presumably the reason for both Rover & Rolls Royce adopting this layout on their early poist war models, the Rover 90 being in a league of its own as a 'tow car'

Is there any chance the driver at 5 min 54 secs be a young Phil Green? It would be good to ask him, wouldn't it!

Hi Drummond,

Yes, I did, and composed a post about it yesterday but fluffed the 'send' button and lost the post and didn't do it again at the time.

But one of my queries was that if the CD was mainly for home and Commomwealth use, why would it have been LHD?

I'll bet George knows!

All,

I found an article in my Jowett CD folder called "The Italian Run", this describes the history of the CD, mock ups, the first prototype GKY 540 and onto a test drive through to Italy to evaluate the CD. Here is some of it -

The CD was designed to take either left or right hand drive and subsequently [ following an intensive 12 week, 24 hours a day testing period] it was converted to lefthand drive.
The purpose of this was to enable Lunn and Ted Fannon of the experimental department, to take the car on a European test run. From the factory at Idle, West Yorks, they drove the CD to the south coast, took the ferry to France snd then travelled via Rheims, Dijon and down to Annecy, there to see Marcel Becquart, with whom Roy had driven in the RAC Rally. From there they headed towards Lugano, in Switzerland, to pick up another passenger.
He was the son of the owner of the Garage del la Ville, the enthusiastic Jowett main agent in the region, had trained at the factory and was fluent inItalian. From Lugano, the three adventurers set off into Italy, reaching the coast at the port of Genoa and then heading south for Pisa.
Roy recalls driving down the coast road, the azure blue Mediterranean on the right, while inland, beyond the budding olive trees were snow - capped mountains. He pointed out all this beaty to Ted, a patriotic Yorkshireman. There was a short pregnant silence while Ted digested this remark, then he said "Yorkshire could look like this if it was cleaned up a bit".

The CD then motored south to Rome, onto Naples and Pompeii before crossing ot the Adriatic. They then headed north through Pescara, Ancona and Rimini before crossing to Bologna and back to Lugano.
The trip was most successful, proving as it did the vehicle's inherent durability and generally showing its capabilities and characteristics.
Nothing untoward occurred throughout and only normal servicing was carried out, but he does remember driving down multi- hairpinned roads with Ted shouting that he wanted danger money!. The return trip across France was accomplished via Lyons, Nevers, Le Mans and Rouen and then back to Blighty.

Just to add if anyone wants a photocopy or scan of the full article email me

Regards
