The Jowett display assembled by our Midland section is just down the steps from the Lancaster Insurance stand where the winning Jupiter awaits your inspection.
If you are coming then tell everyone you meet and those you just pass about the two stands.
Spread the word!

The power supply for my computer was left on the stand. Did anyone pick it up?

A few more photos are starting to emerge from the show - the light made larger photos very difficult, but it seems some very talented photographers were at work and admiring cars from the club:

Only the Jupiter that I've found so far, hopefully over the coming days people will be uploading their images and we can get a good photo record of the stand and the cars on display.

Thanks to the friendly club

Good afternoon, I thought that I would type a few lines to say thank you to the club and the people manning the stand at the NEC show as they gave my wife and I such a warm welcome and much of their time (kinder than our own club whom we gave our ticket rebate to - sorry) and may have planted a seed to be germinated. Having pootled in a friends bradford van when I was younger - we may have been affected by the bug.

Well, the crawler certainly got noticed - Classic and Sports Car has shown an image of the crawler and the caption "Love this Jowett Tractor!" along with several other comments along similar lines from their followers and fans on Facebook.

See here for large photo and comments: http://www.facebook.com/candscmagazine# ... 6557034205

They did a better job of getting a photo with difficult light conditions than I did.

Is anyone else strangely tempted to buy a piece of land just to play with a crawler on a weekend? I bet it would do better on an offroad course than many of the new 4x4s out there!

Well, now we're starting to catch up on sleep, and following a very busy week with work I thought it would be nice if I shared my reflections on a big weekend for the Jowett Car Club at the NEC Classic Motor Show as a bit more of a formal report.

A bit of background: The Classic Motor Show is one of the biggest classic car events in the calendar, with over 1,000 cars all contained in the huge National Exhibition Centre near Birmingham. Literally every car imaginable is there, with a focus on variety and some really interesting cars I never knew existed. The event ran over the 12th, 13th and 14th November, and has thousands of people pour through the doors every day.

Also as part of the show is the Classic Bike Show and the Top Gear MPH show, and includes a Live Stage with work being done on cars in front of a large crowd at regular intervals. There's also the Restoration Theatre which is run by Leeds City College, who have courses in a number of areas of classic car restoration.

My focus will be on the Jowett cars there, given our personal interest in them, and hopefully the interest of some of our readers, and I'll run through it as a photo diary in the hope that you are still with me by Sunday :)

Thursday

All the cars are brought to the NEC to get onto their stands, and the stands themselves are quite a large construction in many cases. We had very generously been given a covered parking space at Chez Malcolm on Wednesday evening, which was a good thing considering the torrential rain that lashed across the South East and Midlands on Thursday morning. We had a quiet night at my parents place in central Birmingham and a lie in in preparation for a big day to come.

Amy was required for lunch with the organisers of the Classic Car of the Year competition, along with all the category winners, with a guest. I wanted Keith to be there for lunch, and to hear the outcome, as he has put in so much work on the project, and largely because sometime in 1979 the story started with him planning a truly bonkers project. After a quick drink, I left everyone to lunch and headed to the NEC to assist the rest of the Jowetteers with the setup of their stand and getting the cars in.

When I arrived I was shocked. For starters it took me about 20 minutes to find the Jowett Car Club stand, the show is simply a massive space with cars everywhere, and at lunchtime on the setup day navigation was a challenge. I was then more shocked by the Jowett Car Club stand. I was expecting 3 or 4 cars, a table with some leaflets, and lots of enthusiastic members. Over the course of the afternoon I suddenly became aware of why the club had won "Best Small Club Stand" last year - they had almost every different type of Jowett vehicle present, the stand was incredibly professionally presented, with huge amounts of information on the cars, Jowett history, notable features of their vehicles and a large selection from the JCC Shop.

The Stand During Build Up

Apologies for the photos, the NEC is a remarkably difficult place to take good photos, especially after dark - I was working with some very orange overhead lights and it was getting very dark very quickly.

So after some time spent moving vehicles around with the JCC, including pushing a Bristol Crawler into place (above) from its trailer and getting a stationary engine into place, a phone call came through from Amy. Her Jupiter had won the competition, so we would be on the Lancaster Insurance stand. A brilliant result, and we were really happy that a public vote had decided the result - we'd never built the car to be a concours car, so it is unlikely to win any technical merit awards, but it does seem to be popular and hopefully will help to put Jowett further on the map with a few of the big publications.

After heading up to the Lancaster stand to see how things were going, they were definitely a long way behind the JCC lads - though many hands were making light work for the JCC. It looked immediately like we were going to be in for a late afternoon getting the car into place, luckily we had a whole lot of cleaning and polishing to do before then anyway.

Later that evening we got the car into place, and they continued to build the stand around us.

After the car had got onto the stand, we retired to the hotel for a few drinks and some dinner, which then turned into an unintentional rather late night with a few of the other competition organisers and winners.

Friday

Needless to say a rather hefty hangover had well and truly kicked in on Friday morning, but however bad I felt, Amy definitely had it worse, and at noon had to be ready for her photo call!

We headed down to the stand to dust off the car, and then down to the Jowett stand to see the guys. Well again I was shocked - you could barely get to the stand because of the sheer number of people looking around the cars, talking to the team manning the stand, people taking dozens and dozens of photos, and people almost queueing up to talk to the owners of the various cars.

On Friday my parents had come out to the NEC, and seemed to spend the day spotting every car they have ever owned - everything from Ford Populars to Cortinas, Austin Maxis and the like, unfortunately nothing like this:

Image

We spent the day wandering around the various stands, talking to lots of people about the car, Amy did interviews with people about the restoration and Jowetts, and we covered quite a few miles around the NEC. Friday night was spent with some other club members who were making cider in their barn - never one to miss out on some home brewed cider we headed over, only 4 months until we get the barrel open for another party!

Saturday

Amy left early on Saturday morning to meet Chris and the family, needless to say there was a fair bit of shopping planned and discussion about the next project. We also had some important equipment that we needed to see, and thanks to some discussion and after some poking around, we bought one of these for the next project (and perhaps some of the current cars on the road)

Image

After a busy couple of hours, I decided to get myself into a comfortable chair to watch England beat Australia in the rugby. I got home in time for half time, and was astounded with the scoreline, then further astounded by the way they played the second half. Sometimes when you have a weekend where everything is going your way even international rugby games aren't outside my sphere of influence...

Back to the NEC on Sunday for more car stuff, and we had a bit of time to go and see some other car clubs, we had to go and see the MX5 Owners Club that Amy is a member of, who are very keen to get some more info on the restoration project.

A nice Ford Hotrod, often seen at the Eagle Cafe in Apsley:

Sunday evening was a bit more eventful than planned. First challenge was getting the car out of the NEC and on its way home - not an easy task with 1000 other cars from the exhibition, and probably 3 or 4 times that number leaving the carparks around the site. Luckily we got the nod fairly quickly for Amy to go, and she was on her way, so I could go and get the new lifty/tilty thing into the car. It is massively heavier than it looks, one person can just about get it off the floor. After a race with another stand who were trying to load up everything in their van while I took the tilter apart, I managed to win and get out first. Not that I am at all competitive.

Unfortunately during the unbolting of things, Amy phoned. The NEC rules require that petrol tanks are as good as empty before going on to the stand, so the car didn't have much fuel in it at all. She had gone to the signposted services, only to find a dark lorry park in the middle of nowhere with nothing but diesel, and probably not enough fuel to get to the next station. Once I'd loaded up I had to get to the nearest petrol station, conveniently they didn't have petrol, so after a 20 mile round trip managed to find Amy in a dingy industrial estate in the middle of nowhere. We got her back on the road, and then into Corby Services.

After a minor detour to collect the cats I was following Amy down the motorway, however she had about a 1hr 20 lead on me. Now if one car leaves Corby Services travelling 55mph and has to travel 100 miles home, Jack leaves Corby Services and drives 55 miles in the wrong direction at 85mph, who gets home first? Well, it turns out you arrive home at pretty much exactly the same time to put the car to bed and unload a massive heffing lifty/tilty thing, then off to a fairly late but good nights sleep after a big weekend.

They had some lovely Cortinas there. We had one when I was about 5 - when my parents finally scrapped it, apparently I said "are we going to get another spotty car?" because of the massive number of rust patches all over the thing! Only beaten by a Renault 21 they bought a couple of years later - they didn't have any of those at the show. I can't think why ;)
