[quote="Alastair Gregg"]What about the Bristol crawler tractor? The box for that was surely going to be based on the Jowett but had to be different as well, didn't it?[/quote

the Bristol crawler used a completely different 3 speed box in which 2nd gear was direct, this being the most used gear sometimes refered to as the ploughing gear. At the governed engine speed of 2000rpm speeds in gears were

1st 1.66mph
2nd 2.8mph
3rd 4.9mph
rev 1.5mph

These may seem very slow but were pretty average tractor speeds for that era the very popular standard fordson being fairly similar.

Hopefully this will appear only once today!!
I notice that the mystery box has a casting number on the side - does this shed any light with anyone?

I still reckon that this was a prototype box maybe for a stillborn 8/10 hp upgrade, or even as part of the Bradford development. Maybe it was too expensive and the production vehicles got the cost down version. Alternatively was it an export variant designed to circumvent some taxation or patent problem that was eventually resolved?

And thinking far outside the box - what about the La Roche?

Hello all,

Was it too late for the La Roche?

Wouldn't that be a find!!!!

this type of box was fitted to one la roche i.e. the standard jowett 4 speeed box but i havn't a clue as to whether it used normal bell housing or a separate one- I would expect the la roche 4 cyl would have been designed to take the jowett box, bellhousing and all. The other la roche used a wilson tpe preselector mounted remotely from engine.

The pic is sort of hard to see what the number is? Cant check casing since dad has misplaced the gbox housing.

What i think it is 9991? or maybe 8991 its a bit hard to see when you zoom in on the pic.
