Living with a Jowett 7
My mother bought a Jowett 7 in 1936. I was born in 1939, just in time to be taken on its last run before being put up on bricks for the duration - the car, not me! My mum was breast feeding me at dusk on a common, when a bush jumped up and said, "Sorry, ma'm, but you're in the middle of an exercise." Post war, Mum drove the car until her untimely death in 1960. After 17 tests, my father was then licenced to terrify passengers. (He had not driven before and should never have passed.) Despite promising me the car, he sold it in the late 1960's for £90 to an enthusiast, boasting that he had recovered the original price. The registration was CMD 648 and I wonder if any one still has the car or has used it for the parts. Riding was like being in a large saloon with a tiny engine. Approaching 50 mph shook the body frighteningly. Our local mechanic said the car would climb any hill, but not how long this would take! I loved that car; can anybody give its subsequent history?
My mother drove a Jowett 7 saloon from 1936 to her death in 1960; father learned to drive in it then and sold it about 1965 despite promise to pass it on to me. Reg CMD 648. Can offer a bit of its history, inc. war & post war.Interest only,I'm68.
