Hello Folks

I have been able to talk to Gilles. He does not have a 10hp car....he has a BRISTOL tractor with a 4 cylinder side valve flat four engine, which he believes (and I do not know) is the same engine as fitted in the 10hp car.

The tractor engine is missing the valves, distributer, timing chain, flywheel, starter motor (if there was one, he has a crankhandle).

Can anybody elucidate? Personally I have heard of twin cylinder Bristol tractors, not 4 cylinder, but it is not an area I know much about. Who in the club can I contact to try to help Gilles? If such a thing is available, he would be happy to buy a complete engine, rather than just the parts.

Regards Vic

Hi Vic, there are a fair number of Bristols with 4 cylinder Jowett engines. I suspect that they were fitted with a mag rather than a distributor and I wonder if that is where the initial problem lay as it would have been driven from the timing case much like the pre-war dynamo. If it is the same as the 2 cylinder stationary engine, it was probably a Wico mag.
There is an enthusiastic Bristol tractor club - they advertise regularly on British Ebay.
JCS probably has valves, STILL has cylinders and can probably supply ot source a timing chain. My guess is that the Mag could be a challenge, but I reckon that Tractor folk may be more helpful than we can be!!
