Our Annual National Rally was held mid March at the small ski-field servicing town of Ohakune on the slopes of active volcano Mount Ruapehu, adjacent to Tongariro National Park. Of course as the season was Summer(ish) the landscape on the mountains was like a different world from that which is usually seen by any members that go there during the skiing season. That made the choice of venue particularly interesting.
Still, even though the town is small there is lots to do and see in the "village" and within a short drive. The NZ Army's Military Museum at Waiouru, "Smash Palace" (a very unique car wrecker's yard that featured in a popular movie!) and the Tangiwai rail disaster site was visited, as was the Chateau within the National Park. Many cars ascended the steep but well maintained road past the hotel to the the operating Ski-lift at "Top=o=the Bruce". The lift took them to the terminal and the cafe at the end where a most magnificent view can usually be seen as their reward.
The village with it's many eating establishments allowed folk to choose a different restaurant or cafe for every "eat out" meal if they chose to! Also, there was a large "Swiss replica" complex which easily accommodated the "formal' side of things . . . the prize giving and the evening of feasting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BW1GT9X-zkk (There's much more "action" than the trailer lets on . . . this may be worth asking about at your local Video Library!)
All in all, a really great venue was chosen by the Northern Branch and without a doubt a good time was had by everyone . . .
