Hello all.

This post contains the vague hope that there's someone in this forum's very knowledgeable (older?) membership who can help a Vintage Car Club of New Zealand member who looking for information on, and is also contemplating building a gasifier to convert wood (not coke or charcoal) to gas to drive (I assume) a vehicle.

As an aside, I believe with my slight knowledge of the process, that he'd be much better off doing the process of converting the wood to charcoal "off the vehicle" . . . there's tar and water to be separated if wood pre-converted to charcoal is not used. Then with both/all fuels the dust particles contained in the gas going to the engine has to be filtered out too!

I'm sure that any information on gas producers in general would be most appreciated by the VCC of NZ member and even raise interest in this "alternative and sustainable" fuel by others . . . especially with the high (and rising) price of fuel. Our petrol went up by 3 cents/litre a couple of days ago!

I will have a talk with dad on this.
He knows a bit on this subject.
Also My grandad ( The Late Mr J Shaw) was the last cheif engineer of the ChCh Gasworks. He built a gas producer for use on a car.
He mite had passed some info onto Dad since he was interested in Gasworks too.

Dad says its the same as producing coal gas. But you use saw dust instead of coal in the producer.

Leo are u talking about the wood/coke gasifiers in fairly common use during WW2?
While researching Alternative fuels with octane a few yrs back I came across instructions as to how to build one for an American Ford.
I saved it...but having trouble finding it....it was a copy in PDF format from the internet.

I think we mite have some plans somewhere how to build a Gas producer for a car.
Also I dont think they bothered at the time to filter out inpurties from the gas.

Yes, that's quite correct. The instructions you mentioned would probably be of great interest to all, especially to the VCC of NZ member on who's behalf I made this request.
