Just back from a long trip to the north of Australia in my TD5 Landrover.9800 klm in about 4 weeks including Darwin and Kakadu.
All good ,met lots of great people along the way.I Australia we have a lot of "Grey Nomads"traveling, usually in enormous motorhomes or with big caravans. There are lots of free camps to stop overnight at to save money.
Gave an impromptu concert for the grey nomads at Banka Banka station for a couple of hours and looked in the guitar case afterward, but no money found.I don't think I would do any good as a busker. They loved it though.
The highest price paid for diesel fuel was $1.95.9 at Elliot in the Northern Territory. We averaged about 7klm to the ltr cruising at about 110kph on the highway towing our camping trailer.

You are lucky to have something to go grey!
Having heard your busking in Armidale it is clear those up north do not appreciate good music enough to pay for it.
