As far as I can see this number does not quite fit any Jowett so perhaps some figures have been misread. For Pre war engine numbers the first number denoted the model year eg 1934 cars started at engine number 435620. so that doesn't fit . perhaps a closer examination of the number may clarify things

Rene: -

Welcome to the website!

Have you just got the engines, or is there a gearbox attached? This might also provide a clue.

I hope you will be able to solve this mystery, but just in case - where is the engine located? The Club has members all over the world so someone might be able to visit you to help.

Good luck with your search.

The following have been received from Rene.

If you are interested

We are going to England every year to the War and Peace show in Paddock-Wood,in July.

It is possible to bring the Jowett to England.

This is probaly ( I am not absolutely certain!) a JOwett engine from a Bristol tractor, The radiator is very like that use on the tractor and other identifying features that I think apply only to the tractor rather than the wartime industrial engines is the pulley on the front of the crankshaft for a fan belt. It also appears to be fitted with a magneto ( presumably only being used as a distributor because of the separate coil shown in the phot) Bristol tractors used a magneto. I would put its date at 1940 to 1942 as it has 4 nuts holding each end of induction pipe to cylinder which I think came in in 1940 and Bristols stooped using the Jowett engine sometime in 1942 changing over to austin power units.

The above is a 'best guess' as I am not an expert on either Bristol tractors or Jowett industrial engines.

Where would / could this leave the engine number question?

Were stationery - and tractor - engines numbered in the same sequence as car/van engines or did they have a different one?

The plot thickens . . . .

the number 454495 looks correct for an industrial engine of c1942 as eng numbers 454482 and'89 are in the 2008 club register of industrial engines.
