Leeds City College Javelin restoration

Mike Cowan, the instructor for the restoration course, and his team were very enthusiastic. Expect to see the car at the NEC in November. Simon Wood (one of the JCS heroes) will be liasing with the course. The college would welcome any involvement from club members who would find the experience very interesting. Hello everyone, I'm Michael Coman, course tutor for the restoration course here at LCC and we're very pleased to be involved with this project and hope it will bring loads of promo for you in the club, us at the college and the industry as a whole. I will come back on here as and when we need help with things. We have one of your members signed up for the course so that will help a lot. "The Jowett Car Club has given a 1951 Javelin to Leeds City College.

Chris Spencer, Jack Moon, Keith & Amy Clements got in touch with Leeds City College after receiving a Javelin in need of a lot of time and effort from a former member of the club, which had all the parts required to put it back on the road. Having met the team from the college at the NEC Classic Motor Show in 2010 (where they run the Restoration Theatre every year) a plan was formed to give them a car for restoration - the primary driver for this was to help the college to promote its upcoming course, inspire the next generation of Jowetteers and to promote the JCC.

It was great to find an opportunity to return the car so close to the Bradford factory where it was made, and work with a college that is clearly contributing a great deal to the world of classic cars. Everyone we have spoken to is very excited about the chance to contribute to the project and engage with students who will be the future of classic car restoration, and their location couldn't be closer to the spiritual home of our cars. Chris Spencer arranged a van and trailer to transport the car and parts from Kings Langley on 30th July, and both Keith and Chris were very impressed with the facilities and welcome they received.

With the course now fully booked for September, and applications already received for 2013/14 the college was on the lookout for a new project for the students to learn new skills and this project gave them a chance to find out a bit more about the history of car manufacturing in Yorkshire.

Michael Coman, course tutor, writes: "When the opportunity to work on the Javelin came up, everyone thought it was an excellent way of giving the students a taste of real restoration work whilst also being able to jointly promote the industry and Jowett cars. We will be taking the car to the Classic Motor Show at the NEC in November as a centre piece of our ‘restoration theatre’ so people will be able to come and see it before any work is done to it. We intend to use it in classes for the students to repair using their newly developed skills, because of that it won’t be a quick process but we hope to have made a long lasting and mutually beneficial partnership with a very active club in the Jowett Car Club. The college has not taken on a car in this way before, but the obvious enthusiasm from the club and dedication to supporting us is what has prompted us into this joint project."

The recent hot topic of Slow Moving Used Spares fits with this project - bulky spares such as panels and large engine components which may otherwise have faced an uncertain future with limited storage at JCS will be provided to support the restoration, and a car which very definitely had an uncertain future is now in the hands of a team who are committed to restoring it with our support.

Over the course of the project we may appeal to members with specific requests for parts or technical support, and I look forward to showing the college what the JCC is all about."

The print media is now catching up with the internet - I am told we have a half page in Classic Car Weekly devoted to the story, off to pick up a copy at lunchtime.

Please keep an eye out for the story popping up in other magazines and websites, and let us know. Hopefully this will be the first of many articles we see on this partnership as it progresses, providing lots of positive publicity for Leeds City College and the club.

re this car, good write up in the Jowetter. What are the chassis and Reg numbers of this car , does our registrar have them for the record ?. In the 2008 list I could not find the late owner's name in the Javelin list so it may not be recorded? Bob

Hi Bob,

The reg no and chassis has gone to Eden for the records, I haven't heard back on whether it was already in the records but the records now have Michael as custodian of the car at the LCC address.

I'm afraid I don't have the chassis or reg no to hand, but these were sent with the address details last month.

I really liked the cover photo - what a welcome to the JCC!

Have just seen this via the front page. This is good news more publicity for JCC, Will they be at the NEC Jack? Looks like the marque will be taking the NEC by storm. Hopefully encouraging more future recruits!

Alan - Yes Leeds City College will have the Javelin at the NEC as the centre-piece of the restoration theatre along with the five or six Jowetts on the Midlands organised stand - along with your car - and Jack advises me that Tom Chapmans Abbott bodied Jupiter will be on the Bauer Media stand - as Jack states this year will be a record for Jowetts displayed at the NEC show

The LCC Javelin was exhibited at the the NEC classic car show this weekend in the restoration theatre - and what justice they gave it - this is the launch of the restoration for the college who displayed the car with some of the wings and the bonnet removed - hundreds of show goers gathered around the car as the the college presenters talked through the project - I was delighted to see Jack's idea of the 'QR' codes being used by the public - the overall interest is somewhat overwhelming - and so rewarding to see a simple idea of approching the college with the car and ideas being taken onboard with such enthusiasm. The college presented in very professional manner with stage lighting - live camera screening and audio - just fantastic to both see & hear !!

That little box you see sitting on top of the oil filler is the endoscope used to see inside the cylinder to view the stuck valve and other useful archeaology of the engine. They showed this on the big screen for all to see.

What was really encouraging was overhearing the visitors coming up to the stand and saying 'this is a Javelin donated by the Car Club to the college'. Also that the 4 deep rows of people surrounding the stand were enthralled by the presentations and engagement of the LCC staff and helpers. Hopefully this series of courses over the next few years will give many people the skills and familiarity necessary to restore Javelins, bring a selection of useful new members into the club and forge a relationship with JCS to bring new spare parts to us.

I noticed the front valence inside the car that looked like it had been freshly painted. It turns out this was presented to Mike Cowan ( the leader of the course) by the grandson of Derek Hawkins who previously owned the car and had been found in the attic after 35 years of storage.

The QR code stickers seem to be particularly read by 'foreigners' interested in finding more out about the car, as a 5 sec scan stores a link they can come back to when they get home. Of course, the young ones just have it programmed into their brain to scan anything with a QR code!

Hopefully the work by Jack and Chris organising the relationship, Amy, Keith, Jack and Chris moving the car from its previous home, Keith preparing the car for the move, Chris and Keith transporting to LCC , and Jack publicising the deal will reap some rewards for the Jowett fraternity.

Simon Wood who toils in JCS every Monday is attending the course and thus acts as a continuing link.
