Peking to Paris Rally

Post by David Morris »

Hi,

We have just purchased a current copy of Classic Car Weekly, published 19th June 2013.

Page 4 shows a excellent shot of the cars gathered for the Peking to Paris Rally. Right in the bottom right corner ( just above the words 'to Paris' ) there looks to be a black Jowett Javelin, with the rally number '52' on its side. Unfortunately, the registration number is not visible. We would be very interested to know how this entry coped with the rally?

The problem is that, when we looked through the entry lists for the 2013 rally, which is still in progress, entry 52 is shown as a 1968 Volvo saloon entered by Phil Burgan(GB) / John Wright(GB), and it seems as though there are no Jowett's entered in this year's rally at all?

Obviously, the Javelin might have been entered for the rally at some occasion in the past, although we cannot see one in the previous lists of participants, and we would be very grateful if anyone could shine some light on this mystery?

All the best,

David and Juliet

Hi David & Juliet,

Are you sure it is a Javelin? The Volvo looks a bit like it from the back/side, and is indeed no 52.

It could be a stock photo from a previous entry, but I can't find reference to a Javelin entering either.

Not sure if the 19th June edition is still on the shelves - worth scanning if it is definitely a Javelin, and we can try and work out the mystery!

Jack.

I would be very surprised if anyone (including me) even considered taking a Javelin on such an adventure. I have not studied past entry lists, but I have been on rallies with many previous contestants. Whilst the Javelin has some desirable attributes for the event it really does not have enough ccs.

This year's event has been marred by a double fatality.

I should eat my words having just looked at the current positions after 27 days. An MG TC is lying 8th in the pre-1941 class. (although TCs were only made from 1945!) but because of its small engine size they probably dropped it down a class.

If you want to get a taste for what to expect start reading the daily rally reports http://www2.endurorally.com/pp2013/reports.html I suggest you start at day 1 and see how many problems were had!

Hi All,

I have been contacted by the editor of Classic Car Weekly, after e-mailing him. Yes, they have owned-up to using a stock photo, supplied by the organisors of the rally. In this year's rally, entry 52 is the Volvo that Jack mentions and shows in his post.

The editor suggests we contact the organisors, Endurance Rally Association, to throw some light on the Javelin entry. I must admit that, in my view, the picture in the Classic Car Weekly really does show a Javelin, unless I am greatly mistaken! It's a good side view of a black Jav, with the four doors, number plate on the boot lid, hub caps removed etc......Pity I cannot see the reg no.!

I was given a two part DVD of the 1997 rally, and it makes really great viewing! Only wish I could afford the entry fees for the next rally, which are eye-watering!!

Many thanks for the comments,

David

Hi,

Hopefully, I have scanned the photo from Classic Car Weekly and this is attached.

I still think it is a Javelin! What do you think?

That picture is from the 1988 Pirelli Marathon on the Tre Cimi in Cortina d'Ampezzo. Geoff McAuley's Jav. I was there!

Mike Smailes and Keith Clements were first in class at the finish in London beating an MGA by just 3 seconds.

Just read the route preparation notes. They hired a standard Skoda Octavia to survey the route, poor thing....http://www.endurorally.com/pages/peking ... e-survey-2

Sorry I lied! I have just read the results http://www.classicrally.org.uk/cradb/index.php . Choose 1st Classic Marathon from drop down list. It was 2 seconds. Now I recall it was 3 seconds going into the last test at Crystal Palace in the pouring rain and slippery track. At the prize giving in the RAC HQ we did not get our prizes as the crew we beat protested because we had put an Interlink sticker on the side of the car. We did not get the prizes until a year later!

Here are the results of the 20 times Jowetts entered CRA events

Event-Car Num-Crew-Car make-Overall position- Class position

The 1st Pirelli Classic Marathon 52 Gooff McAuley / Frank Woolley Jowett Javelin 62 5
The 1st Pirelli Classic Marathon 31 Malcolm Oliver / Bill Lock Jowett Jupiter 85 9
The 1st Pirelli Classic Marathon 21 Mike Smailes / Keith Clements Jowett Jupiter 37 1
The 2nd Pirelli Classic Marathon 32 Geoff McAuley / Frank Woolley Jowett Javelin 24 4
The 2nd Pirelli Classic Marathon 88 Keith Clements / Drummond Black Jowett Jupiter 71 17

The 1st Rally of the Tests - Blackpool 79 Howard Bryan / Rob Pilcher Jowett Jupiter
The 2nd Rally of the Tests - Scarborough 47 Howard Bryan / Rob Pilcher Jowett Jupiter 47 5

The spelling mistake is not mine, but I left it in :D

Note the only Did Not Finish (DNF) was Howard and Rob on their first rally.

And these are the extra events I entered with John in the Rochdale.

The 5th Monte Carlo Challenge 142 John Blanckley / Keith Clements Rochdale Olympic 52 3
The 6th Monte Carlo Challenge 71 John Blankley / Keith Clements Rochdale Olympic PH1 65 6
