From July 2013

Firstly my apologies for last month and I can categorically blame SKY for this
break in service. To be without broadband for ten days is like driving a Jupiter with no
engine. However, we are now firing on increased megabytes/second, so normal service
is now in acceleration mode.
Let's cover our meeting first and the 'Drive it Day' outing to Summerlea
Museum on 21st April, which delivered four Jowetts that, as usual, attracted heaps of
attention. The 'Fifties' Rock n' Rollers came out especially to get their picture taken in
front of the Javelin, courtesy of the local newspaper. A good display of classic cars was
on display which is now putting this event high on the calendar.
The Car Boot Sale on 12th May was next on the agenda; two estates, both filled
to the brim, left Shotts at 6am and headed down the Clyde Valley. The early morning
was dry, but for how long? As normal, sales were being transacted as we were setting
up our joint stalls. Binoculars, toys, china, clothes, brass candle sticks, pictures, books,
jewellery, CDs, you name it, we sold it... Highlight of the morning was the sale of a
'mother of the bride' outfit and the comment "a kin gang ta yer waddin noo". The
weather suddenly changed for the worse just after 10am and a quick loading of the
remainder of unsold goods took place. Arriving back at Shotts around 11am we were
pleasantly surprised to count our takings of over £250.00 for Section funds. Thanks to
all members who contributed, and a special 'thank you' to Lynn and Ruby for
engineering this fund-raising venture.
Due to a family commitment, Ruby and myself did not attend the National
Rally this year; instead, we were at a large family wedding in West Wales. We could
not resist returning via Llandrindrod Wells and driving past the Metropole, and yes - it
is still GREEN. The Section was well represented at Basingstoke by Bill and Sandra
Purves, and Lynn, Martin, Rena and the boys, who all agreed that they had had a really
good time. Bill says the Bradford made the round trip with only a couple of issues, one
of which was repaired and a new temperature gauge is now required. Our
congratulations go to the Bradford on winning the Premier concours.
A dull cloudy but dry day faced us for our first visit to the Tayside Classic
Rally at Errol Airfield near Perth on Sunday 9th June. Five Jowetts formed our line-up
in the club area, and I must say that the interest and welcome shown by organisers and
visitors was exceptional. The fibreglass bodied Bradford of Barry Eddon, the Javelins
of Jim Spalding and Lynn and Martin, together with my Jupiter, all created a nice setting
in front of our, now regularly used, event shelter. We were invited to display a selection
of our vehicles in the ring and asked to give 'The Jowett Story' ( post-war version) to the
assembled crowd. Ninety years since the formation of our Club and the value of the
Jowett Juniors, as Andrew and Kris were waving to all from the cockpit of the Jupiter,
were also well related. The organisers thanked us for attending and I am confident that
we could command a more prominent location if we decide to attend in 2014.
On the technical front, Martin's engine will be on test by the time you are
reading this. A few Jowett gearboxes have been in for investigation and remedial work
and, with a break from Jowetts, a new clutch and hydraulics fitted to the Rover 75!
...Plus a few other jobs?
That's us up to date with reporting now. We have a busy few months ahead
with some good events planned, so please check our diary and see what you can attend.
