World Wide Web is 25 years old

Post by Forumadmin »

Tim Berners-Lee is celebrating 25 years since inventing the World Wide Web. I am celebrating 21 years of running a website promoting Jowetts. In 1993 a few web pages were created and put onto a site run over a modem running at a snail's pace. 10 years later the site moved to a hosted system better connected to the Internet backbone. 3 years later forum and archive services were created to allow those interested in Jowetts to communicate easily and share their experiences and knowledge. 6 years later Internet Services were added to allow event booking and other database related functions.

Apparently 90% of the UK population can access the Internet according to the 'news' this morning. Although I doubt it is quite that high, it shows how important the medium is. The world could now not live without the WWW.

As the old Jowett website proclaims, the Jowett Car Club membership list was put on computer in 1974 so I am also celebrating 40 years of JCC membership list on computer. Well it is another excuse for a beer! :D

100% of the UK population can access the Internet, they just need to go to their nearest library, internet cafe, or buy a £20 smartphone. Nobody in the UK is cut off from the internet. Of course, whether the 10% simply choose not to, that is their choice, but they are missing out on an awful lot of very useful stuff.
