Dutch Jowett Rally 23rd to 27th April 2015

Post by Forumadmin »

Dutch Jowett Rally 2015,
Welcome to our first Newsletter.
After the rally announcement in the previous year, we would like to share some of the information we have up to now on our Dutch rally. When we have more detailed information available, another news-letter will follow.
First of all we would like to wish everybody a good and healthy 2014 with many enjoyable Jowett moments.

We are organizing a 4 day rally that will start on Thursday afternoon the 23rd of April till the departure on Monday morning the 27th of April 2015 after a farewell breakfast.
We have chosen for this weekend because this is normally the time of year that the flower fields are at their best.

After many months of sorting out, a nice hotel, suitable to our expectations, has been found. We are enthusiastic about this find and are negotiating on further details at this moment.
This hotel is located in a small village, near the dunes and the beach, about 10 kilometers (= ca. 6½ miles) from the town of Alkmaar in our province Noord-Holland.
More details on this hotel will follow as soon as possible.

Coming to Holland by ferry or airplane (Amsterdam) enables short distances to be traveled to get to the hotel.

For questions or details contact us on: dutchjowettrally2015'at'gmail.com

After the work done to the front wheel bearings and the road test to the rugby match a list was drawn up in preparation for trip overseas. Amy took charge first fixing play in the steering arm.

Then tackling the play in the rear wheel, though it needed me to apply the required torque on the hub nut. To get bite on the taper you really need at least 100lbsft.

Then onto the midship which required a new rubber and new straps.

Ib,
I will bring a spare can along to relieve you of the weight!
Your spares order is being fulfilled. Tacho drive cable on its way and I have ordered master cylinder kits.

Boddies to Netherlands Rally

Post by Forumadmin »

Vic Boddy phoned me yesterday with an oil pressure problem. He had total loss of oil pressure, luckily whilst sitting in the car in the garage. The engine has done 200km with no issues, and the engine still runs but with no oil coming out of a disconnected pressure gauge pipe. Even when revving the engine up only 5 psi registers (not done for long of course).

What could it be ?
Split pin come out of pressure relief valve, broken or cracked pick up pipe, housing gasket blown into timing case, unsecrewed banjo on top of pump.

I suggested looking down inside timing case to see if any oil being sprayed around...before taking sump off.

With respect to Vic Boddy's loss of oil pressure experience, another possibility is that the shaft that drives the oil pump may have sheared the key, most likely inside the oil pump (the key is quite small). For example, if the oil strainer has a hole in it, some debris could have got into the oil pump and jammed the gears. It is just another thing to look for.

Back in circa 1970, I was driving my Javelin quite spiritedly back from a distant pub late at night when suddenly out of the corner of my eye, I saw the oil pressure gauge needle drop down to zero! Pulling over to inspect, I discovered that the flexible hose to the oil cooler had burst and emptied the sump all over the road. I was still 10 miles from home, so what to do? Well, I had no option but to drive home with no oil. By driving gently; no more than about 1/3rd throttle, I made it all the way home without incident. The next morning I put on another hose, replenished the oil, and I was good to go without any obvious ill effects to the engine for many thousands of more miles. I put this down to the aluminium crankcase which is good at carrying away the bearing heat.

Vic phoned last night and said he had found the problem. The filter housing gasket had blown emptying into timing chain casing. He proved this by unscrewing the oil filler tube.

I too had a hose blow on the SA at the M4/ M5 intersection whilst overtaking in the outside lane. It took some time to get to the hard shoulder. Amy was in the carrycot behind the backseat.
I think this was before mobile phones (1979 after Malvern Rally) but I managed to use the JCC First Aid list to contact a local member. They managed to find a hose on an old engine. We arrived home early in the morning. I have also had the filter housing gasket blow seriously at least twice. Both times I managed to fix at the side of the road. This prompted me to modify the tappet cover plates so the housing could be extracted without removing them. Now I have done the O ring and aly plate mod.
It is most important to tighten the vertical bolts and only lightly tighten the horizontal bolts so as to get the gasket properly squeezed.

Amazing service from John Powter of JOAC spares, Ib's Tacho cable arrived today. Less than 24 hrs!
Also Ib's master cylinder kits arrived from Pastparts in same timeframe.
Also brake springs from JCS to replace my spares used on the PC Javelin.

It must be Christmas...but the weather is gorgeous.
Amy and I went to the hustings in the village to hear an interesting mix of candidates for the general election. Quite heated and thought provoking at times. I would recommend to see which candidate, rather than party politics, you should vote for.

Jaak Jacobs in Belgium received the carbs I rebuilt for him, has them fitted and tuned and so should get there a little bit quicker!

I really need now to get around to replacing the carbs on all three of our Jowetts. A job for after this jaunt.

Yesterday I did some more tuning with the programmable distributor and will post the current speed and dwell maps when I have time.
It still has some hesitation at low revs and runs out of puff at 3800rpm (but the latter I am sure is carb related). By super duper strobe light showed there was something peculiar going on at low revs but I have run out of time to investigate. Engine now sounds crisp.

Washed the cars yesterday and just come in from polishing. So now have to get all the spares and tools together. Oh and then I have to pack.
Anyone going from Harwich tomorrow night (Wed)? Amy, Jack, Chris and Sharon are travelling Thursday night.

The tulips bulbs I bought in Belgium after the Spa weekend are now out, so an aperitif for Friday.

To help all those who have taken photos and want to upload them to the Gallery please have a look at the updated post on how to use Gallery Remote.

This suite of programs should allow Windows, Mac and Android users to select or drag and drop files onto the Gallery Remote application for easy download and resizing. Note that IPad users may have issues as I tried this on Howard Bryan's machine late on Sunday night without success, but that may have been due to other factors.
