Grease in my rear wheel brake shoes ???

Post by rickjowett »

I need to fix this obviously. I removed my rear wheel brake drum to check my shoes, and I found grease in there. Dangerous for sure. What is broken and is there a DIY on how to fix it? A seal of some type for sure, any ideas on what it is and where I can get one? :?

Is it grease or oil?
Grease comes from the wheel bearing and oil from the differential.

Look at this index.. viewtopic.php?f=65&t=4564#p24814
Choose Rear hub
Two seals are employed. 29 and 25
Maybe you get these from JCS or if not a good seal supplier although I know there are some issues with supply of the inner one.
Look at viewtopic.php?f=152&t=1207#p42347

Outer:
SKF CR18658 Double Lip Nitrile Rotary Shaft Seal 1.875x2.75x0.313 inch
Inner: Payen NA325 equivalent:
SKF CR13157 Double Lip Nitrile Rotary Shaft Seal 1.313x2.282x0.25 inch Part No: CR.13157 Brand: SKF Price each: £9.87

Worth checking taper for wear. Make sure nut can be tightened correctly and washer does not touch shaft.

Also make sure the grease bleed hole is open and do not over pack grease.

This site is full of helpful people and is a great resource for Jowett owners. It's great to see you asking questions. I'm in California. Drop me a PM and I will send a phone number and can walk you through some of the Jowett quirks.

Not currently. I used to be a member of the JOAC and Jowett Car club, but paying as a US citizen to the UK was such a hassle I gave up on both after a few years. This was back in the late 90's / early 2000's. Is the payment method easier now?
