Jupiter luggage rack - stainless steel

Post by Wendy »

Hi,

Last list in JOAC 2016 - stainless steel luggage rack.
Does anyone know where still available?
I realise as bodywork Aluminium any direct load would cause denting & hence has to be anchored to underlying tubular steel frame . However, I do remember meeting NL member at 2010 national rally . He was an engineer & had manufacttured his own removable luggage rack which didn't require any holes to body shell - it was anchored to rear bumpers. I missed the opportunity of asking if he would make another. Some years later spotted his car on Dutch car sales site.

Hope someone can help
Best wishes, Wendy

I think other sources of possible racks are available such as from MG club. Mine was originally on rubber pads and it dented the soft aly. So I welded some flat 25x3mm x about 100mm steel to the cruciform underneath the skin. Each had a hole to line up with holes I made in the skin to line up with the 4 legs of the rack. Then made some leg extensions out of brass rod that inserted into the leg tubes and could be bolted into the brackets. The system worked well carrying some heavy loads around UK and Europe. The holes in the skin can be filled with grommets when rack is removed.

There are pictures on here of the Dutch creation which was supported on straps between bumper and hood hoop. Not elegant IMHO.
The art is to pack less and pack well. It is surprising how much can be fitted into an SA. I have constructed a plastic cover around the spare wheel so that it can be filled with fluids ( petrol, 3 types of oil, brake fluid, water),tow rope, jack, fanbelt, and a host of spares, a large tool box and 5 litres of engine oil were housed on the scuttle under the bonnet. More spares in the unused battery box. Then you have volumes of space behind the seat and the 'boot'. But I also made large pockets in the door, a map tray above the passengers legs and fixed a gallon bucket between the driver and passenger legs on the floor (mainly used for snacks and drinks. The glove box was filled with rally instruments!
