Fuel pump

Post by Barry20383 »

Having problems overhauling the mech pump on my 1953 Javelin.
Have received a new kit from Jowett spares and have fitted the new diaphragm by pushing in the rod and twisting bayonet fashion.
The pump works ok for a while then fails. On opening the pump the diaphragm pin has jumped out of the slot.
This has happened twice am i fitting the diaphragm wrong or should i refit the old one back as it seems ok.
Thanks .

Not something that has happened when I have overhauled. Perhaps post some pictures of both installed and uninstalled to see any differences. If the old one works then do not fix it !

When it comes to wearing parts, I believe in preventive maintenance, so replacing diaphragms is a good idea.
The rubber perishes & can lead to breakdown & petrol in the oil.
Playing with old pumps also shows reduced performance of old & dried diaphragms compared to a freshly built pump.
Good memories of Bradfords.
