Website not working.

Post by Forumadmin »

I am not quite sure what has been going on with the website over the last few days but it has been intermittently become unavailable. Some early morning work shutting the whole system down and then restarting it, plus a lot of investigation, seems to have restarted everything.
Let us see if it keeps going.

The website was unavailable again between 6:11 and 7:22 as well as going down between 8:34 and 9:13.

It did come back up on its own so more investigation required.

There are many layers that have to be working but I suspect the problem may require an increase in system memory which will cost more.

Well you are reading this.
I have moved the server from Switzerland to Belgium to double its memory.
Not a particularly easy task but hopefully the machine will not only be stable but will also be faster.

However, the website went down again during the night. It seems to be a problem of the reboot sequence not functioning correctly. The system does seem to reboot some of the services periodically and this may be what is causing the issue as an alternative web service is being started in this reboot which does not work!

So more investigation. But keep using the system but just make sure you do not type a lot in a post but copy it from a text editor.

I have just tried the Video service https://jowett.net/services/video/video_choice.php to play a few videos from the hundred plus available. Good response from the new server!

You can get there via the Search Server Menu. https://jowett.net/searchserver.php
The response from the Archive search is now much better.

I get an email within a few minutes of the website going down but of course need to then do something about it which can take some time. Hopefully I will eventually figure out why the system is having issues. It maybe because it is being attacked and overloaded. This morning I blacklisted an IP address that seemed to be persistent and might be causing the problem.

You may find you get an error on Firefox or other browser caused by the updated security certificate. On Firefox this can be fixed following this guide. https://www.clickssl.net/blog/sec-error ... and-serial

You can delete the old certificate with Fix 3: Delete the Certificate causing issues in Firefox
or
use Fix 2: Resolve your Mozilla Firefox SSL Settings. Then reset back to False after new certificate is loaded.

Other browsers should follow another procedure.
