Hi All,

I was working on my Jowett Searchlight generator the other day and was struck by the high quality of the nuts and bolts that were used by Jowetts at that time. Yes, they are BSF or BSW, but so sharp on the edges and accurately made, in comparison with the metric versions more usually in use nowadays.

Has anyone else noticed this? Metric nuts and bolts, in comparison, are just sloppy and not made to the same standards. And this was in the middle of WW2! How standards have slipped!

I have a large tin of original Jowett bolts from the several pre-war Jowetts that I have dismantled over the years. I agree with you about the quality.
They also just seem to 'feel right'.
I seem to remember that Jowett made their own nuts and bolts in the pre-war years at least, but I'm open to criticism.

Dear Tony - Something that none of us would ever do !

I agree on the quality and look of old nuts/bolts and always use them if possible, particularly in visible areas. I don't think it was just Jowett, I have taken apart a few Austin 7s which have fittings of a similar quality.

If anyone has quantities of original BSF nuts and bolts, I will gladly take them off your hands!

On the topic of Nuts and Bolts... I had my Javelin near side front wing renovated recently (and a good job it is too!) Unfortunately the bolts could not be 'rescued' and were replaced by hexagonal bolts with nuts (metric, I guess) Does anyone know the size of the said bolts and nuts (although I guess captive nuts were used?) And their availability? Thanks for any help.

I agree Jowett bolts seem good quality.
The other thing I am amazed at is the inability of modern producers to make a washer that fits the bolts snuggly.
They all seem to be designed foe either metric ir imperial so dont fit either well.

But have also bought up end of line and old stocks from other suppliers .

Note JCS and JCC NZ do have stocks of most and think many are original.
