Some pictures from 2003 Goodwood festival of Speed. Some great Ferraris before they were engulfed by the crowds.
We had a private showing of the most fabulous car in the world. This Rolls Royce has a bonnet badge that recedes if you knock it, an umbrella that comes out of the door pillar, forward opening rear doors that close automatically.....
I wonder how you get that left hand gauge to read 100 or is it 0?
Team Unisys Racing Gravity International Division's TURGID 2003 in pole in the paddock.
The closest I got to the eventual winner on the pickup to the start. Rene Arnoux declined to drive when I offered him the seat.
The Jupiter below some splendid cedars. Some one who built the Abbott bodied Jup was very interested as you might expect.
TURGID coasting past the finish. The Friday run was exciting as I overtook in the S bend at the flint walls, Saturday's run was even more exciting as I overtook the Porsche entry on the line urged along by the commentator and a cheering grandstand. This climb up the ladder put me against Cummins who were 3.5 seconds faster. Hence the gap.
Can you see my horns and devils tail on my helmet above? The jovial repartee with the Vicars in Revelation Racing, meant I cursed them. To my horror it worked and they crashed!
Jemma of the Goodwood team had a bad crash with just a pile of firewood .
Now that hand makes Jemma smile.
The £100000 Lotus was the best roadster.
The much improved RS02 won the day.
Well nearly the winner . We came 11th. That is two 1sts!
Revelation racing with the vicar who won the Spirit of the event.
Unisys Brian Hadfield giving the trophy for the fastest hill climb time.
Sir Jack Brabham signed my overalls and was captured talking to me by the BBC TV crew.
A few familiar faces amongst the ageing greats.
Not in the photo is Juan Pablo Montoya who I briefly spoke to on Saturday. Unlike most others who were autograph hunting I was not brushed aside by the minders. He did not have burning desire to have a go at the soapbox race either!
Champagne and birthday cake for the winners, guests, marshals and soapbox teams. My idol Derek Bell, sports car champ of Le Mans and Silverstone, spontaneously shook my hand and thanked me. (I was talking to some marshals at the time.)
